CHEERS FOR THE 54TH TKU ANNIVERSARY

The 54th TKU Anniversary Celebration was held on 9 P.M., November 8, 2004, at the Student Activity Center. Cheerleaders, rolling and sky-throwing to the rhythm of music, initiated the celebration. “The cheerleaders’ lively and up-lifting spirit activates the TKU Anniversary Celebration,” Founder Clement Chang indicated delightfully.

Above the activity center, various dolphin-shaped balloons swam among blue ribbon waves—a design by Office of Student Affairs and Hsian-fu Lu, lecturer of Dept. of Information and Communication. “The blue ribbons symbolize sea waves, and the dolphin is an emblem of TKU. The design illustrates the ambition and hope for TKU to swim toward the Fourth Wave in the coming year” President Flora C.I. Chang interpreted.

In the ceremony, “The Golden Eagle Awards” were respectively given to Dr. Horng-jinh Chang, former TKU President, Mr. Ying-wei Tsao, President of Linksys Cooperation Group, and four other alumni. While Founder Dr. Chang presented the award to Dr. Horng-jinh Chang, he commented that “Dr. Chang deserves to get this award earlier. We have to wait until he retired from the presidency to present our deepest respect.” Another award-winner, Dr. Yu-ming Chang, President of De Lin Institute of Technology, received the medal from the hands of his own daughter, Ting-ya Chang, freshman of Dept. of International Trade and one of the “amity ambassadors” of TKU. It was warm and interesting to get both father and daughter into the picture in that ceremony.

Founder Dr. Chang felt proud of the distinguished achievement of TKU alumni in various fields, including information, enterprises, and education—“even the presidents of public and private universities.” He expected to hold the anniversary celebration at both the Tamsui campus and Lanyang campus next year. He emphasized that the four campuses (Taipei, Tamsui, Lanyang, and Cyber) should be integrated in their intellectual and material resources, so that TKU could stand out among international universities.

President Flora C.I. Chang requested VOTK to play a song by F.I.R “I Want to Fly” for every student and faculty of TKU. Part of the hope-inspiring lyric reads: “I want to fly/ Over sadness,/ With a feeling of light./ Freedom is dream--/ The never-ending energy.” She expressed her wish that “TKU students should be courageous and adventurous to make their dreams come true.”

Chairman of World TKU Alumni Association, Mr. Teng-chien Ho, founder of KOJEN English Language School, who leaded many alumni to attend the anniversary, promised that all TKU alumni will support every new construction of TKU and he will invite them to be reunited next year to celebrate the beginning of enrolling students in Lanyang campus. He indicated that members of TKU would feel proud that our campuses occupy two of eight most-photographed sceneries in Taiwan—Sunset at Tamsui, and Sunrise at Kueishan.

The ceremony also expressed gratitude to Prof. Ching-tang Lu and 22 other donators each with a certificate of merit from Ministry of Education(MOE) and a commendation plate from TKU. Commendation plates were also given to 14 solicitors for the donation, including Founder Chang. Two alumni—Mr. Cheng-ji Tseng, Principal of Lan Ya Junior High School, and Mr. Ming-cheng Wen, Principal of Dung Men Primary School—who won the “MOE Distinguished Principal Leadership Awards”, were invited and given with “Light of TKU” award plates.
