The Life Science Development Center (LSDC) of the College of Sciences will be holding a meeting entitled “2005 Forum on Commercial Marin Life Technology” this Friday (April 15th ) at Rm. Q409 of Chung-ling Chemistry Hall introducing the wide applications of bio-technology in commercial fisheries.
The host of the event, Wang San-lan, the Director of the LSDC, explains that this forum will mainly discuss the marine life and fisheries off the coast of Yi-lang County as his unit has worked closely with the County Government of Yi-lang, such as planning its Bio-tech Science Park. Thus, he points out that one of the purposes of the forum is to explain to potential investors about the planning of the park and the rich marine life, such as the abundant supply of mackerel nearby, to attract them to set up facilities in the Park.
Wang also indicates that as TKU intends to establish disciplines in commercial applications of bio-tech as well as the management of food sciences at its Lanyang Campus in the near future, it is vital to work with/through the Science Park. He believes that Yi-lang has a great deal to offer to both TKU and the Park, since its warm and humid weather makes the place an ideal incubator for all kinds of fungi, which are great for the development and growth of certain health food. In light of this advantage, Lanyang campus will set up its own farm one day to grow organic vegetables with natural fertilizer provided by the fungi.
Apart from Wang, professor Chen Yau-hung of the LSDC, together with professor Chang Hong-ming from National Taiwan University, have been invited to comment on and discuss the theme of the forum. At the forum, food products from Taisan Enterprise Co. Ltd., and the special equipment for beauty products using nanotechnology by Elite Beauty Company will be on display, too. They are two of the sponsors of the forum. Please write to sabulo@mail.tku.edu.tw or phone (02) 8631-1015 for registration. (Ying-hsueh Hu)
