337 TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WERE HOME QUARANTINED AFTER A SARS SUSPECT FOUND

Tamkang University (TKU) President Chang Horng-jinh instructed to set up “SARS Prevention Committee” on April 28 after a senior of Department of International Trade (DIT) was alleged as SARS suspect on April 27.

Four teachers and 333 students she was in class with have all been quarantined for ten days. They return to class today since no suspect case was found during the 10-day quarantine.

The student’s mother made an urgent call to DIT on April 28, saying that her daughter, a senior of DIT, was diagnosed by Veterans General Hospital and listed as SARS suspect yesterday, suggesting to implement a series of preventive measures in TKU. The suspect was transferred to Armed Forces Hospital at Sungshan, Taipei on April 28. Tung Wan, Secretary General of TKU, cited what the suspect’s mother said that she would be able to leave the hospital if the condition remains stable.

Besides, a student of Department of Electrical Engineering who automatically imposed a 10-day quarantine due to his sister, a staff in Hoping Hospital, has already returned to class since he was confirmed as SARS negative.

According to a survey made by Personnel Office (PO), four dependencies of TKU faculty returned from SARS infected region. Two of them went to see the doctor in Hoping Hospital. According to a survey made by Office of Student Affairs (OSA), up to 4:00 pm, May 2, 2003, a total of 333 students were being quarantined. Of which 123 students were home quarantined while 189 in their rented houses. Eight female students were being quarantined at their dormitories. According to the rules, their 10-day quarantine was terminated yesterday. TKU authorities have provided them with food during the quarantined period since they were not permitted to go out.

Department of Health (DOH) informed TKU last Friday that an assistant of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering had accompanied a SARS suspect to hospital. TKU authorities ordered sophomore Class A and Class C of the Department whom the assistant was in class with immediately stopped class. Since the assistant visited hospital on April 25 and a 10-day home quarantine was terminated yesterday, they could return to class as usually today since no more SARS suspect was found during the ten-day home quarantine.
