65 % OF FACULTY AND STUDENTS ARE DISSATISFIED WITH STUDENTS ‘IMPETU OF STUDY’: POLL

A great majority of faculty, staff members and students were generally satisfied with the objective of school, campus administration, library, use of computers and administrative teaching support, according to the result of a survey conducted and released by the Educational Development Center (EDC) recently.

However, the same result showed that they were dissatisfied with students’ “atmosphere of studying”.

The survey broke down in three categories—the faculty division, staff members division and student division. The satisfactory degree on students’ atmosphere of studying, enthusiasm of learning, ethic conception of teachers and students and expression ability were similar to that of last year while the dissatisfactory degree was lower than that of a year ago.

Over 65 percent of faculty expressed their dissatisfaction on students’ studying atmosphere while less than 10 percent of polled expressing the opposite. Part of faculty suggested that a strict elimination be carried out. About 34.1 percent of students polled also were dissatisfied with students’ atmosphere of reading.

Asked about the objectives and development direction of TKU, 48.5 percent of faculty polled was satisfied with school’s improvement of teaching conditions and readjustment of departments and institutes, an increase of 7.2 percent over the last survey. About 14.4 percent, a decrease of 7 percent over the last poll, was dissatisfied with school’s efforts.

The satisfactory degree of students regarding the issue of “ hiring higher educational background teacher so as to upgrade qualification of teachers”, “ improvement of teaching conditions and readjustment of departments and institutes” and “ promotion of teaching and administrative innovation” was slightly decreasing as compared with that of last poll. Especially, the first one was decreased by 6.3 percent.

The dissatisfaction is increasing on “ process of policy-making”, “dissemination of new policy”, “coordination among all the units when a new policy is to be carried out”. Faculty polled suggested that the policy-making process be transparent, open and be conducted through communications. They also suggested that all the unit chiefs be consulted with the opinion with teachers before any policy is made.

The survey which has been made in the fifth consecutive year, was made of 17 issues, including school objective and development direction, campus and its management, and qualification of students.
