A total of 498 scholars have applied for faculty openings of Tamkang University (TKU) for the 2003 academic year, which is 24 less than last year.

TKU President Dr. Chang Horng-jinh said that TKU would continue to invite outstanding teachers to join TKU faculty. Those who have outstanding performance on research and teaching will have priority to be employed, Chang said.

Forty-eight departments, institutes and centers under TKU have offered the vacancy of teaching position for the 2003 academic year. TKU expects to invite 67 scholars to join its faculty. The applicants, at first, will pass the screening by each college-level screening committee. Then they should pass three screenings by school-level screening committee to be held on May 16, 19 and 23. Those approved will join the TKU faculty for the 2004 academic year.

According to Personnel Office (PO), 41 applicants are vying for four vacancies offered by Department of English while 31 applicants vying for one vacancy offered by Department of Chemical Materials. Twenty-three applicants are vying for two vacancies offered by newly-established Graduate Institute of Life Science while 26 and 28 applicants are vying for each vacancy offered by Department of Chemistry and Department of Mathematics, respectively. In addition, Department of Insurance and Department of Public Administration, which offers a vacancy, respectively attracts only an applicant.

The doctorate degree and the post above the assistant professor will be two preconditions for application requirement with exception of Office of Physical Education (OPE) and Department of Architecture (DA). OPE demands that applicants should be obtaining Master degree and a member of national representative delegation with the age no exceeding 40 while DA demanding the assistant professor with Master degree, who will teach the course of architecture design and research on special projects. The remaining departments, institutes and centers demand an applicant with doctorate degree as a must.
