In order to correspond with the time trend and future tendency, the College of Engineering (CE) is agressively vitalizing departments and institutes under the control of college.
Department of Civil Engineering will split into the “Engineering Installations Division” and the “Construction Business Division”. The Department of Chemical Engineering (DCE) will be renamed to “Department or Institute of Chemical Engineering” and “Department or Institute of Material Engineering”, effective from the 2003 academic year.
The “Engineering Installation Division” will emphasize on the field of the traditional civil engineering and the general introduction of civil engineering, which will be incorporated into the first year courses with the aim of helping student understand the difference of civil engineering from other engineering while the “Construction Business Division’ be emphasized courses of business management. The division will offer courses of management, statistics, accounting and construction management aimed at cultivate high quality of construction management talent.
Chang Der-wen, Chair of Department of Civil Engineering, said that facing the rapid change of the market, graduates of Department of Civil Engineering would advance to the rank of administration after working at the field of civil engineering for a period of time. The tentative result has appeared on students’ application for the newly-established Construction Business Division, whose achievement test scores academic results were higher than those applied for the “Engineering Installation Division”. Chang said: “We want to break through the bottleneck of the traditional civil engineering. The changing would recruit more high quality of students.”
Cheng Liao-ping, Chair of Department of Chemical Engineering, said that in order to cultivate students to be a high-tech talent. The newly-established “ Department of Chemical Material” will emphasize its research on the chemical materials. Teachers from National Taiwan University’s Medical College, the Bio-tech Center and TKU Department of Chemistry will offer the course at the department. Some state-of-art courses likes “Introduction of Nano Materials” and “Precision separating technology” will become an optional course. Cheng said: “The traditional chemical engineering is inclining day by day but the new style of chemical engineering will find its own direction.”
