GRADUATE STUDENTS OF THE INSTITUTE OF CHINESE LINGUISTICS AND DOCUMENTATION TO HAVE MULTINATIONAL AD

A graduate student to have multinational advisors will no longer be a dream. The Graduate Institute of Chinese (GIC) and the Graduate Institute of Chinese Linguistics and Documentation (GICLD), Tamkang University (TKU) will help students realize the dream.

The GIC has already been implementing this system for three years, selecting students with multinational double advisers. In addition to their original adviser, students will have a Non-Chinese linguistic scholar as their adviser. Hsieh Jung-ting, a third grader of the Graduate Institute of Chinese in Master Program, has invited Prof. Lu Kuo-ping, TKU and Prof. Shih Han-tsuang, California State University, Sacramento as her advisers. She believed that receiving Chinese and English exchange program would help her have a better view toward studies of Chinese.

The newly inaugurated GICLD will completely adopt this system. In addition to the local advisers, the institute will invite international Chinese linguistic scholars to assist students of the GICLD. These scholars will come from the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mainland China, the Great Britain, Belgium, Spain, France and Germany. They will be invited to conduct distance academic study and make friendly exchange. The GICLD hopes to set up a global research of Chinese linguistics to attract more students home and abroad to come and pay a visit. Meanwhile, students can enlarge their international view through mutual exchange.

Prof. Lu Kuo-ping who is in charge of organizing GICLD, said that Chinese studies and Chinese linguistic culture are important parts of international linguistic culture. The Chinese linguistics will become a significant course in the future. The establishment of the nation’s first GICLD will help develop the Society of ROC Ancient Documentation and the Society of ROC Chinese Linguistics and Culture.
