The l0th Convention for German Teachers/Scholars Association and the Seminar held between October 20 and 2l at the International Conference Room, Ching Sheng Memorial Hall was considered a great success. Mr. Lee Kuei-hsien, the world renowned translator and poet laureate candidate for Nobel Prize for Literature 2002, was invited to give a key-note speech, “Crossing the Border: A Confession”. It was simultaneously translated into German by Prof. Holger Hoeke, and both the speaker and the translator had done such a wonderful job that the enthused audience greeted them with a resounding applause.
On the second day, Translation had become the focus of discussion. Prof Lai Li-show lay out all her teaching outlines (the syllabi) for the conferees to peruse and appreciate. And Prof. Hu Kung-tse’s paper on “Translating Non-literary Essays” was just as interesting and instructive as his compeer’s teaching outlines.
The l0th Convention for German Teachers/Scholars Association has decided that the next meeting will be held at Wen Zao Ursuline, College of Languages. Meanwhile, two faculties from T.K.U., Profs. Wei Jung-chi and Stefan Bucher were elected as the Directors of the Board, one of them to be the Secretary General. Prof. Chang Shan-li from Fu Jen has become the President of the Association.
