“The Automatic Football Player” Steals the Show in Last Week’s Pageant of

In the combined Pageant of Four Departments in College of Engineering held last week in the Exhibition Hall, Business Building, “The Automatic Football Player” undoubtedly became the main attraction.

The fantastic program was masterminded by Prof. Wong Ching-chang, who was also helped out by 9 graduate students. They divided the game into 2 parts: the defensive vs. the offensive. Each team’s players are virile and nimble capable of fierce attack. However, they are not made of flesh and blood, but genuine robots without a human heart or mind.

What their inventors did was simple. First, they taped the simulated ball game, then had it transmitted to the host computer for analysis. Afterwards, they used manual labor to calculate the routes taken by the combatants. Interesting?

Also stealing the show were “Willy, the Robot”, again an invention by Prof. Wong Ching-chang; an unmanned airplane by Prof. Ma Der-ming, Department of Aerospace Engineering, which has won the First Prize in the National Aircraft Exhibition and “The Automatic Robot Caddy-boy”, once again created by the same Prof. Wong.
