The German Scholars/Teachers Association is scheduled to hold its l0th Convention between October 20 (Saturday) and 2l (Sunday) at the International Conference Room, Ching Sheng Memorial Hall. Meanwhile, a seminar on the topic of translation as well as the cultural polarity of East and West will also be underway. Scholars from the host university Tamkang, Tai Ta, Cheng Ta, Fu Jen, Tung Wu, Wen Hua and Kaohsiung Technology U. will attend the Convention and read their research papers. Dignitaries scheduled to address the Convention include Pres. Chang Horng-jinh of T.K.U., Prof. Lin Yao-fu, Dean, College of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Frau Sabine Hagemann, Director, German Cultural Center in Taiwan and Prof. Reinhard Duessel, Chair, Department of German, T.K.U., and a host of others.
Scheduled on the Convention’s agenda will be a keynote speech given by Mr. Lee Kwei-shian, famous poet/translator of the German language; his topic: “Crossing the Cultural Borderline: A Confession”. The speech will be translated instantly by Dr. Holger Hoeke, Assistant Professor, Department of German.
The bi-lingual conference uses both German and Chinese as media of communication. For papers delivered in German, they are generally intended to discuss the frustrations of understanding generated in cultural disparity. For those given in Chinese, problems arising from pedagogical as well as translation areas will be many scholars’ focal point of attention.
