Student Evaluation System Subject to Change Soon in Tamkang

The Student Evaluation (Grading) system which has had a proud tradition of more than 30 years in Tamkang University may be subject to change as proposals submitted by faculty of College of Sciences are being considered by proper authorities.

Prof. Pong Way-faung, Chair, Department of Physics, who proposed such a change, argued that in cases of some courses which cover a whole school year, a student is often wary too much of the consequences if he/she states what he/she truly feels about the professor’s performance, and so, nine times out of ten, we are facing a none too judicial feedback from the student body. What Prof. Pong suggests is that why not let the students fill out an opinion poll at the end of the first semester while holding back the true reckoning (grading) at the end of the second semester. At that time when summer vacation commences, a student will feel safe and sound at home while the professor is savoring his/her acrimonious retort in his/her air-conditioned office in Tamkang. In other words, what scores he/she gives to the professor will not impact his/her bottom-line.

Prof. Wang Kuo-cheng, Department of Mathematics, commented that the implementation of on-line evaluation since last year has somewhat cheapened the good results of the system which Tamkang U. has enjoyed for years because, as he noted, much of the work was done in a haphazard way. It ruins the good intention of the original system.

Prof. Chen Kan-nan, Dean, College of Sciences, remarked, on the other hand, that often is the case that a strict marker will get a totally unfair grade from those students that he/she flunked. And this is an iniquitous phenomenon that we need to look into and discuss judiciously, Prof. Chen further commented.
