Counseling Center Renovation Completed, Offering Students a Warmer and More Supportive Environment

To provide students with a safe and comfortable space for psychological counseling, the Counseling, Career Development and Learning Center participated in the Ministry of Education’s “Campus Aesthetics and Mental Wellness—Counseling Space Renovation Project for Colleges and Universities”, completing its space optimization project. A completion tea reception was held on May 8 at 11:00 a.m. in Room B408. The event was attended by Executive Vice President Chun-Hung Lin, Vice President for International Affairs Hsiao-Chuan Chen, Chief Secretary Wen-Chih Huang, Military Education and Training Office Director Chin-Yen Lai, Dean of Academic Affairs Tzong-Ru Tsai, General Education and Core Curriculum Center Director Shun-Jie Ji, former directors of the Counseling Center Yen-Wei Hu, Kai-Chieh Hsu, and Yi-Chun Lin, as well as many faculty and staff members.

Executive Vice President Lin thanked staff members who continued working during the renovation and commended the cross-departmental collaboration. He emphasized that the project was not merely a hardware upgrade but a crucial investment in strengthening Tamkang University’s mental health support system.

Dean of Student Affairs Shih-Jung Wu proudly noted that Tamkang University has consistently performed well in national student counseling evaluations, earning full funding from the Ministry of Education for this renovation. He described the project as “student-centered,” aiming to build a safe, private, and supportive counseling environment, and promised to continue securing resources to enhance support systems. He also thanked all colleagues for their dedication throughout the process.

The renovation began in September 2024, and the completion event included a video showing the “before and after” transformation, followed by a guided tour highlighting key design elements. The “Yuan-Yu Lounge” (「圓遇所」) at the B408 entrance features curved lines and vertical paneling to connect the reception counter, blending multiple functions to create a calming, student-friendly waiting area. A tea island is a transitional space between reception and staff work areas. Adjustable workstation partitions allow staff to balance privacy for clients with collaborative teamwork. Additionally, Room B131 was transformed from a storage room into an individual counseling room. At the same time, Room B129 was renovated into a group counseling space featuring curtains and curved lines to promote an inclusive and secure atmosphere for interaction.

Counseling Center Director Hung-Yen Sung noted that Tamkang was one of the first four universities nationwide to receive funding. From proposal drafting to planning and communication, the center’s team handled everything in-house, working closely with architects Adriana YuShan Huang and Claire YaLing Hou from InFeel Architects. Other universities have praised the outcome as the “most student-centered counseling space configuration.”

Counseling psychologist Yi-Chun Lin shared, “The center has been transformed into a bright and warm space. Students have already started providing positive feedback, reassuring us that this will become a safe and supportive base for their mental well-being.”
