GRADUATION SONG MUTED: COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY CANCELLED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE PAST 52 YEARS

TKU authorities have decided to cancel the 2003 commencement ceremony and campus tour after accepting the advice of the Ministry of Education (MOE). It will be for the first time in the past 52 years that no graduation song will accompany the graduates when they are departing the school since Tamkang University (TKU) was founded in 1950.

60 STUDENTS OF CHINESE DEPT. POSTPONED GRADUATION

A total of 60 graduates-to-be of Department of Chinese (DC) may face a destiny of prolonging study, representing one-fourth or 25 percent of total 280 graduates-to-be. Of which, 50 percent of students are resulted from double majors or minor subject selection. Tsui Cheng-tsung, Chair of DC, said that students should make better plans for their college life as soon as possible.

DEPT OF INFORMATION AND LIBRARY SCIENCE TO HOLD NETWORK SEMINAR ON MAY 29

The epidemic SARS has shocked all walks of life in Taiwan and as a result, all interschool and outside school large-scaled academic seminars have been cancelled or postponed. The “2003 Information Technology and Library Science Academic Seminar” sponsored by Department of Information and Library Science (DILS) will be held online for the first time. The meeting will be held at 9:00 on May 29 and those interested can log on to http://research.dils.tku.edu.tw/conference/2003, the home page of DILS.

FRESHMEN’S ENGLISH ABILITY TEST CANCELLED DUE TO SARS

Freshmen’s English ability test to be held on May 31 will be cancelled after SARS severely hit Taiwan.

Public Service Center of Tamkang University (TKU) which will sponsor five overseas study tours in summer vacation has decided to cancel all the planned tours due to SARS after considering the safety of participants.

EVALUATION OF STUDENT CLUBS PARTIALLY CANCELLED

The planned implementation of evaluation of student clubs from May 31 through June 2, 2003 has partially been cancelled due to SARS. In order to prevent SARS from further spreading, the activity has shrunken into two days but the evaluation and tea party will be held as scheduled. The indoor exhibition will be cancelled while those outdoor exhibitions and award presentation ceremony will be postponed until next academic year.

UPDATE ADDRESS DATA OR BE PUNISHED

In order to update communication data, the Guidance Section of Office of Student Affairs (OSA) has already established an overall student communication database. Tsao Tian-ya, Chief of Guidance Section, said that the database would greatly help school authorities monitor the SARS situation. A Student Merit and Punishment meeting held on May 14 has amended regulations of governing student merit and punishment under which students who do not update his basic data will be punished or reprimanded.

WANG SHENG-MIN NAMED FIVE-TIGER HILL LAUREL

Winners of 19th Five-Tiger-Hill Literature Award are announced. Wang Sheng-min, junior of Department of Chinese, was crowned laurel of novel division. Winners of Verse Division and New Poetry Division went to Wu Sheng-yu, student of the first year of Graduate Institute of Futures Studies; and Yang Ying-ching, student of the third year of Graduate Institute of Chinese. The award-presentation ceremony will be held on the date to be fixed later.
