The TKU Diamond Jubilee Concert Kicks Off
Students at the TKU Diamond Jubilee Concert start shrieking upon seeing their favorite singer.

On the 5th of November, at 5:30pm on the dot, crowds began to pour into the TKU Student Activity Center. They came to see the TKU Diamond Jubilee Concert, which boasted a dazzling line up of TKU alumni artists, including acclaimed singers Ricky Xiao and Crowd Lu.

Foreign Language Alumni Enjoy a Cultural Extravaganza
Five separate departments from the College of Foreign Languages and Literature showcase cultural dance performances.

On the 6th of November, the College of Foreign Languages and Literature staged a cultural extravaganza. It was a show featuring dances by each of the college’s departments, including the department of Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Russian. Over 400 department alumni returned to take part in the cultural activities.

On the evening of Nov. 5, the quadrangle in front of the Ching Sheng Memorial Hall exploded to life with flicking lasers, streaking LED lights, and tufts of fake mist that gently wafted upward. The medley of lights and sounds was part of the Diamond Jubilee “Lighting Display”, which was the first in a series of fun activities organized to celebrate the TKU 60th anniversary.

On Oct. 30, the Department of English held a large-scale event to celebrate its 60th anniversary. In keeping with the theme, 60 tables were set up to seat 600 department alumni, who boisterously reflected on 60 years of TKU history. Among the 600 guests were three alumni who were part of the first class of TKU English graduates. Now in their eighties, one of them used a walking stick to walk, while another needed to be supported by a carer. Their determination in attending the event made a deep impression on the younger members of alumni.

The Fujian International Business and Economic College

On the 2nd of Nov., delegates from the Fujian International Business and Economic College (FIBEC) visited the TKU Cham Pion Incubation Center at the Tamsui Campus. They were received by the Chairman of TKU’s Department of Banking and Finance, Dr. Chiu Chien-Liang, who provided a brief overview of TKU’s academic credit program, and discussed the mutual exchange of talented personnel and prospects for closer collaboration with the business sector.

Central and South American Media Arrive in Taiwan

A group of reporters from Central and South America recently visited Taiwan to report on the opening of the 2010 Taipei Flora Exposition. During their visit, they came to TKU’s Tamsui Campus for informal discussions with the TKU Graduate Institute of the Americas. The director of the institute, Lucy Chen, said “the Flora Expo is a huge event that has lifted Taiwan onto a world stage and attracted Central and South American media to Taipei. We invited the reporters to the TKU forum to give our students the chance to speak Spanish and experience foreign diplomacy first hand”.

The Forum on “Prospects for Enhanced Cross-Strait Collaboration”

On the day of the TKU Diamond Jubilee, nine university presidents from nine separate Mainland Chinese universities converged on the Tamsui Campus to take part in the festivities and attend the TKU Official Ceremony. In the afternoon, eight of the nine presidents participated in a Presidents Forum on the topic “Prospects for Enhanced Cross-Strait Collaboration”. During the forum, TKU signed an agreement with Tianjin University, making Tianjin the 29th TKU sister school from Mainland China. TKU and Nanjing University then concluded a student exchange agreement, set to take effect as early as next semester. President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, said that TKU has always actively pursued cooperative programs with its sister universities, and that in future, even more universities will become a part of the TKU sister school network.

Celebrating the “Birth” of the TKU Family

On the morning of Nov. 6, a Diamond Jubilee Homecoming Day was held to welcome alumni who returned to celebrate TKU’s 60th anniversary. The event took the form of a morning tea, with 26 mouthwatering meals and 400 plus alumni. During the event, TKU President, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, and the President of the TKU Alumni Association World Federation, Chen Ching-nan, each took to the stage and stood behind a red podium with a huge golden egg. They then used silver hammers to crack the eggs, symbolizing the birth of the TKU family.

The Presidents Forum on “New Trends in Higher Education”

During the recent Diamond Jubilee celebrations, TKU hosted approximately 85 guests from 35 universities around the world. The guests, apart from attending the Official Ceremony on the 6th, also participated in an international Presidents Forum on the 7th, held at TKU’s idyllic Lanyang Campus. The forum explored the topic “New Trends in Higher Education”, with speeches delivered by six university presidents from renowned institutes in the USA, Europe, and Japan.

The Diamond Jubilee Official Ceremony was held on the morning of November 6. It signaled the start of Tamkang University’s 60th anniversary celebrations, and drew an assortment of well-known attendees, including the Founder of TKU, Dr. Clement C.P. Chang, the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, and almost 100 dignitaries from TKU’s overseas sister universities, as well as TKU alumni, faculty, and students. The President of the Republic of China, Ma Ying-jeou, also arrived to pay tribute to TKU, and was greeted by a flock of cheering, shrieking students. In his speech, he emphasized how gratified he was to see “Tamkang University, Taiwan’s first private university, attain such remarkable achievements in just 60 years”.
