Ushering in the Year of the Snake

On Feb 18, after a long, three-week Winter Break, TKU faculty and staff returned to Tamkang for the first day of work in the Chinese “Year of the Snake”. To mark the New Year, TKU held the annual Tamkang University Morning Tea at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall, Tamsui Campus.

Webometrics has released the results of its most recent (January 2013) evaluation of world universities. In this evaluation, TKU again sealed first spot among Taiwanese private universities. In two of the assessed criteria, “Presence” (Web presence) and “Openness”, TKU’s ranking displayed marked growth, going from 676 to 254 (openness) and 48 to 40 (presence). Overall, TKU placed 445th in the world; 72nd in Asia; 10th in Taiwan, and 1st among local private universities.

Partnering with Northwest University

TKU recently concluded a new sister school agreement with Northwest University, China. The partnership will involve joint research on topics of mutual interest, exchange between scientific researchers, mutual visits, and internship programs.

The East China Sea Peace Initiative

Tsai Hsi-Hsum, a TKU associate professor from the Graduate Institute of Asian Studies, recently went to Japan with four representatives from other Taiwanese universities to present the East China Sea Peace Initiative. Upon arriving in Japan, they met with Japanese parliament members, public think tank members, and Taiwanese ambassadors to Japan.

The TKU Future Cross-Strait Affairs Camp

From January 21 – 23, the TKU Center for Advanced Technology held the Future Cross-Strait Affairs Camp. This year, participant numbers grew to a total of 40, which included local university students, 7 Mainland Chinese students, and professionals hoping to gain more Cross-Strait knowledge.

On the evening of January 11, the International and Mainland Student Guidance Section held the annual Spring Festival Banquet. Attendees included the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang; the Deputy Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council, Ko Ching-jung; and Lu Yun-bin, from the Ministry of Education, as well as foreign, overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese students from TKU. In total, around 280 people took part.

A Teary Farewell for Tamkang Retirees

On 10th January, retiring TKU employees were honored at a ceremony held at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall, Tamsui Campus. The ceremony was attended by the President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, and the former Minister of Education and current Chair Professor at TKU’s Graduate Institute of Educational Policy and Leadership, Dr. Wu Ching-ji. Close to 100 TKU students and teachers also came to bid farewell to the retiring members.

Each year, on the day before the winter holidays officially commence, TKU holds a major "End-of-Year" gala to usher in the holidays and mark the coming Chinese New Year. This year, the gala festivities were organized by the Office of Student Affairs.

An Alley Named After Alumnus Ching-Long Lu

A Parisian satellite town known as Bussy Saint-Georges recently named an alley after local Taiwanese diplomat and TKU alumnus, Mr. Ching-long Lu. It is the first time a Taiwanese diplomat has gained such an honor in France and was the result of Lu’s continued efforts to promote bilateral ties between different cultures in the rapidly-developing town.
