Enterprises' "Favorite" for 16 Successive Years
TKU placed among the top ten universities in Taiwan, and first among Taiwanese private universities.

Cheers recently announced the result of its annual "enterprises' favorite graduates" survey. TKU came 7th out of all universities in Taiwan and, for the 16th consecutive year, 1st among Taiwanese private universities.

A New Look for TKU's Tamsui Campus

This semester, students came back from the winter vacation to find a new-look Tamsui Campus. Possibly the most eye-catching change is the clearly delineated car and pedestrian "lane" that runs through the main section of the campus. The pedestrian section now boasts a thick layer of light green paint, bordered by a white line, which separates pedestrians from cars. The change is intended to make walking through the campus safer for everyone. The Section Chief of the TKU Energy Conservation and Space Section, Office of General Affairs, Chiang Yu-san, noted that "because it often rains in Tamsui, a coarser form of paint was used when creating the passenger strips so as to prevent students or staff from slipping". Reaction to the change has been mixed. Second year student, Chen Yi-dah, stated: "the new look is really good. It makes the distinction between road and footpath just that bit clearer and therefore safer"; others felt that the additional colors were extraneous.

Not long ago, teachers from TKU's Center for Teacher Education teamed up with fellow educators to make a difference. Assistant professor Chen Chien-Han and associate professor Huey-Fang Ju worked with Wu Tsui-ling (contact person, iEARN Taiwan; and teacher, National Feng-Hsin Senior High School) and Wu Chi-chen (teacher, National Shan-Hua Senior High School) to hold the Global Education Teacher Expertise Development Seminar at the New Taipei Municipal Zhuwei High School. As part of the seminar, the organizers assisted students and teachers from Zhuwei High to take part in the iEARN Holiday Card Exchange Project, where they made cards to be exchanged with students in Belorussia and Australia.

Chu Ko Chen Honors College Visits Tamkang

On Feb 20, 2013, a delegation of 21 members from the Chu Ko Chen Honors College, Zhejiang University, visited the TKU Tamsui Campus. The group came to observe Tamkang's academic environment, attend a week-long seminar, and take a tour of the local surrounds. The delegation was received by the TKU Department of Banking and Finance. The Chair of the department, Dr. Lee Ming-Chih, explained that the Chu Ko Chen Honors College nurtures outstanding university students from all academic fields. Therefore, during the visit, TKU organized various activities to promote mutual interaction and exchange.

The TKU Alumni Association of North America and the TKU Alumni Association of Houston recently (Feb 23) held a joint conference discussing "Development and Challenges for the ROC in the Global Context of 2013". During the conference, Dr. Cheng Chin-Mo, the Chair of the TKU Department of Global Political Economy, delivered a special lecture on the topic "Creating a Cross-Strait Consensus; Developing a New Model of Collaboration". His lecture provided an insightful analysis on hopes for attaining a Cross-Strait consensus. Among the attendees were various local dignitaries, including the former President of the Taiwan Benevolent Association of America, Mr. Cheng Chang-Hsiang.

A Special Lecture by Professor David Post

The TKU College of Education recently invited David Post, a professor at Penn State University (US), to visit TKU and deliver a special lecture on academic equality. Prof Post has been the editor-in-chief of a prestigious academic journal, the Comparative Education Review, for almost a decade.

Robotic Fun over Winter

"Why doesn't my robot move?" asked a child from Chia-Jen Primary School, his face perplexed, pondering how to make his robot mobile. In total, over 70 students from Chi-Jen Primary joined the Chi-Jen Primary School Robot Fun Winter Camp, held by the TKU Extension Education Center, Division of Continuing Education. The course ran for 25 hours over five days, and turned primary students into miniature robot experts.

This year, as the masses marked the (Chinese) New Year with red envelopes, round-table banquets, and the deafening clamor of firecrackers, Tamkang's rover scouts did not rest. Instead, they took part in a grueling 6-day induction; an annual event called "Boot Camp – Initiation", which has been held every year for the past 40 years. The President of the TKU Rover Scout Association, third year student Hsieh Min-yan, exclaimed "It's all about getting them out in rough conditions and teaching them to survive!"
