Distinguished “Students” from Central and South America

In spring of last year, TKU began offering a new and unique type of course: the Online Executive Master’s Program. The purpose of the program is to train on-the-job professionals from Latin American and Caribbean countries (that have diplomatic relations with the ROC) and thereby enable these professionals to carry out in-depth research on Asia or take part in international affairs. This is the first executive master’s program in Taiwan to adopt an online long-distance learning format and accept students from other countries.

Open Courses in High Demand

Many graduate level “open courses” – courses “open” for selection by students in other, sometimes non-related master’s or PhD programs – have become very popular. Why, you may ask? Many of these courses allow master’s or doctoral students to take intern programs at leading companies and gain valuable experience before even graduating.

Examining Graduate Feedback to Create Further Improvement

The TKU Office of Alumni Service and Resources Development held a conference on Feb 27th to discuss the results of a satisfaction survey completed by recent graduates. The conference, held at the Ching Sheng International Conference Hall (Tamsui Campus), was attended by a total of 89 faculty and staff from the Tamsui Campus and – via webcam – the Lanyang and Taipei Campuses.

A Speech by Dr. Paul Tseng-Pu Ho

Dr. Paul Tseng-Pu Ho is the Director of the Institution of Astronomic and Astrophysics at Taiwan’s primary research faculty, Academia Sinica. On Feb 26, Dr. Ho came to the Tamsui Campus to talk about Precision Astrophysics. His speech, which was delivered in English, tracked the current direction of local research on astrophysics. Dr. Ho explained that research findings in each of the three main fields of astrophysics – exosolar planets, black holes, and cosmology – require precise calculation and measurement to produce accurate figures, which can be used to conduct future research.

Enhancing the Quality of English Instruction

Tamkang’s Center for Learning and Teaching recently held a forum on how to improve English-instructed courses. The guest speakers were Dr. Chen Ta-Tao (Dept of Chinese Literature) and Dr. Juan Pin-ju (Dept of International Tourism Management), who both have extensive experience teaching in English.
