International Scout Peace Camp 2013

Tamkang has a peace ambassador of its own! At the end of March the International Scout Peace Camp 2013 was held at Jakarta, Indonesia. Extending over seven days, the Camp attracted over 600 scouts from 30 countries, one of whom was from Tamkang. The TKU student, Hsieh Min-yen, explained that the event brings together scouts from around the world, who are striving to help create world peace. During the Camp, they discuss the projects they are working on in their respective countries that they hope will help to promote peaceful living.

Compulsory Student Club Courses Evolve

In the 2011 academic year, student club courses became compulsory for freshmen. Since then, new courses have emerged, like the course Learning and Practice of Clubs, which is now in its second year. Like many courses, it has evolved and grown to cater for student and faculty needs. For example, it now comprises 2-hour classes (instead of one-hour classes), but is held fortnightly (instead of weekly).

The TKU Strategic Studies Annual Convention

On April 26 and 27, the TKU Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies will hold several conferences and forums as part of its first annual convention. On the 26th, there will be a Pan-Pacific Conference on Peace and Stability, which will explore issues to do with safety in the South Pacific, Western Pacific, and the Pan-Pacific. This will be followed by a Regional Security Studies Forum, involving round-table discussions. On the 27th, there will two more events: the 9th Anniversary Memorial Conference for Professor Niu Sien-Chong, and a Symposium of Graduate Students in Taiwan’s Strategic Community.

After passing the preliminary assessment by the Environmental Protection Administration, TKU was recently announced as one of the finalists in the First National Environmental Education Awards, along with six other competing schools. Out of the six, TKU is the only university.

New Incentives for Department Development

To encourage outstanding performance from each academic department, TKU formulated the “TKU Regulations on Incentives for Department Development”, and established the Department Development Incentive Review Committee. To encourage department development, TKU has also launched a new Department Development Contest, in which large cash prizes are up for grabs for departments that perform exceptionally.
