The Freshman Assembly Activity Takes Place on Tamsui and Lanyang Campus

【Reported by Jia-fu Gao, Yi-jie Lai, Tamkang Times】The ceremony for the new semester has taken place and President Flora Chia-I Chang addressed the freshman students by introducing concepts ideology of Tamkang University. She informed them that Tamkang University has been listed as number one for the most desired graduates by 1000 Enterprises’ Survey 16 consecutive times. She also expressed that they should utilize their time wisely and adopt the spirit of excellence into their person throughout their stay at the university.

【Reported by Ya-ting Li, Tamkang Times】Assistant Professor from the Department of Information Management, Min-yuh Day, lead the Information Management at Tamkang University (IMTKU) to participate in the 2013 “NII Testbeds and Community for Information access Research (NTCIR)” competition and performed excellently, receiving the first place in the (CS) category and second place in (CT).

The Ministry of Education Holds Teacher Calligraphy Seminar

【Reported by Yi-ling Huang, Tamkang Times】The Ministry of Education feels that the resources for teaching calligraphy are unsatisfactory and has entrusted the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center to hold the “National Education Calligraphy Professor Curriculum Seminar” last month from the 22nd to the 24th. In attendance was a total of 34 professors. A member of the Ministry of Education, Yu-fang Chang, stated, This calligraphy seminar is really tailored for the needs of the professors and uses a digital curriculum designed on e-calligraphy.” Dean of the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Ben-hang Chang, stated, “Calligraphy has no limitations. It’s important that the professors have a joyful spirit when teaching the class so that the students may absorb this positive energy for their studies.”

Ranking Web of Universities Has Been Revealed for 2013

【Tamkang Times】The Ranking Web of Universities has been revealed for July, 2013. Tamkang University is listed as 733rd place in the world, 165th place in Asia and 16th place in the nation. In the category of “presence” TKU jumped from 40th to 27th, in the category of “openness” TKU has taken a giant leap from 254th place to 41st place. The Ranking Web of Universities is surveyed from the from the month January to the month of July.

President Chang Leads Group of Taiwanese Professors to Strengthen American Ties

【Tamkang Times】Last month President Flora Chia-I Chang took on the position of Chairperson of the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan and cooperated with Political Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, Pi-twan Huang, to establish a united group of professors from multiple junior colleges to visit with American institutions from New York, Maryland and Florida in order to promote cooperation between the two nations.

7,000,000 NT Has been Invested Into Development of State of the Art Research Center

【Reported by Ya-ting Li, Jing-ya Su, Tamkang Times】According to the 2011-2013 development plan resources are being shifted for the creation of the State of the Art Research Center which will be related to the Automation Robotics Center. President Flora Chia-I Chang stated, “This scholarship program is designed to help excellent graduate and doctoral students do research focused on robotics.

Excellent Physical Education Award

【Reported by Yi-qun Yang, Tamkang Times】On the 9th, the Ministry of Education presented Tamkang University with the Excellent Physical Education Award. In attendance to receive the award was President Flora Chia-I Chang, Dean of the Office of Physical Education, Shu-feng Hsiao, colleagues from the Office of Physical Education. The award was presented by Vice President of Taiwan, Den-yih Wu.

The Federation of International Robot-soccer Association (FIRA) Competition Takes Place in Malaysia

【Reported by Ya-ting Li, Tamkang Times】Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and director of the Automation Intelligence and Robotics Center, Ching-Chang Wong, and Assistant Professors, Chi-tai Cheng and Shih-an Li, lead the team team to the Federation of International Robot-soccer Association (FIRA) Competition that took place in Malaysia on from the 24th to the 29th. This is the 18th year to hold this competition and the robots gain more functions and maneuvers each year. Altogether there were 12 different countries and 50 teams competing. The one-week competition emphasized the smooth movements and stability of the various designs.

【Reported by Jing-zhuang, Tamkang Times】On the 9th, the Ministry of Education Awarded TKU as the only Junior College to receive the “Friendly Campus Award.” Also Specialist from the Office of Academic Affairs, Ruey-er Chen, received an award for Outstanding Academic Personnel. These two awards were presented at the same time and acted as a promotion for the both the academic and guidance office. Also in attendance was President Flora Chia-I Chang, Dean of Academic Affairs, Chih-en Ko, who accepted the awards on behalf of TKU. President Chang expressed her deepest gratitude to the Ministry of Education for the two awards.
