150 Students and Teachers Attend the Sophomore Junior Student Discussion

【Reported by Ying-tian Fan, Bo-jun Zhuang, Tamkang Times】On May 6th Vice President of Academic Affairs, Gwo-hsing Yu, hosted the Sophomore and Junior Research Discussion. The Tamkang Times Article 896 has a detailed account of all the happenings that took place during the event. The students recommended a new cross-major curriculum design for the entire university. The Epoch Foundation also put forth the plan for youth leaders designed by the College of Business and Management. Gwo-hsing Yu stated, “These are excellent suggestions brought forth and put together by the student body. Let’s be sure to continue to put together ideas because they will eventually become the foundation and direction of the university.”

Study Learn and Share Week Take Place at TKU

【Reported by Yi-mei Chen, Ying-tian Fan, Kai-qi Zhang, Li-zhen Lin, Tamkang Times】The Center for Learning and Teaching held the “Study Learn and Share Week” in the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall on May 7th. The event attracted over 160 teachers and students. President Flora Chia-I Chang gave a speech complimenting the Center for Learning and Teaching, for all of their diligence and their recent breakthroughs. She also mentioned that it was now required for professors to participate in an instructional workshop every 2 to 3 years. She also mentioned that it was her desire for the university to hold more events that the entire student body could participate in. Lastly she mentioned that the long-distance learning program will become a key highlight of Tamkang University in the future.

【Reported by An-jia Chen, Yi-mei Chen, Tamkang Times】Last week Tamsui Campus was filled with Chinese culture as the Department of Chinese held an exhibition displaying works of A.R.T (Art Revolution Taipei) at the Black Swan Exhibition Hall. The event attracted crowds of people in celebration of the 30th Annual Five Tiger Literary Awards. Well known poets brought their students to observe the “Action Poems”. Action poetry is not a performance, but more of a reflection of lifestyle. The event attracted participants from 50 different junior colleges.

The Majority of Overseas Chinese Students at TKU Major in English

According to statistics gathered by the International and Mainland Guidance Section, the majority of overseas Chinese students major in the Department of English. There are 46 Chinese students in the Department of English while there is a total of 44 Chinese students spread throughout the Department of Japanese Language, Business Administration and International Business Management. There are 39 Chinese students combined in the Department of Business and Management and the Department of Statistics. There are 38 Chinese students in the Department of Finance and the remainder of the Chinese students are in the Department of Industrial Economics, Spanish and Transportation Management.

ICCCI Holds Storytime Workshop

【Reported by Yi-ling Huang, Tamkang Times】The Innovative Center for Cultural and Creative Industries (ICCCI) held the “Storytime Workshop” on May third. They invited President from My Story Island, who taught how to use interactive games to increase speaking skills for middle school students. Executive Director of the ICCCI, Hui-chuan Liu, stated, “My hope is that during this workshop we can cultivate students to use body language to express a complete story.”

Ben-hang Chang Attended the 2014 Art Festival for Chinese Artist Awards

【Reported by Yi-ling Huang, Tamkang Times 】The Director of the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Ben-hang Chang, attended the “2014 Art Festival for Chinese Artist Awards” on May 4th. Vice President Den-yih Wu presented him with the Honored Chinese Heritage Award affirming Ben-hang Chang’s dedication and contribution of calligraphy to the world. Ben-hang Chang expressed, “I hope that in the future the Ministry of Education could make Calligraphy a required course in order to help preserve this tradition in the future.” Ben-hang Chang has been practicing calligraphy everyday since he was a youth. He has adapted from writing on the square practice sheets used for early times to the modern e-calligraphy writing method. Receiving this award is a symbol to Taiwan and the international community of dedication and diligence.

Tamkang University Works with ERP 2014 Accredited Undergraduate Informational Professional Application Program

【Reported by Ying-zhen Lu, Qi-zhuo, Tamkang Times】Tamkang University’s College of Business and Management, College of Engineering and College of Liberal Arts are working together with Enterprize Research Planning (ERP) to promote the “Accredited Undergraduate Informational Professional Application Program.” There was an event held on May 9th to describe the details of the project that attracted over 120 participants. In attendance was Dean of the College of Business and Management, Chien-liang Chiu, Dean of the College of Engineering, Chii-dong Ho, and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Sinn-cheng Lin. Chien-liang Chiu stated in his speech, “It’s difficult these days for graduating students to find their place in the career world. This training course will bridge that gap, immediately putting graduates on their road to success.” Manager of ERP, Jing-yi Wang, stated, “The Chairperson of the Board of ERP and the executive director are Tamkang University Alumni, so we are all excited about the possibilities of what this cooperation will bring in the future.”
