TKU International Students Recognized for Excellence

【Yi-mei Chen, Tamsui Campus Report】Australian student of the Division of Continuing Education, Alexander Salvador Matos, participated in the 2015 Global Culture Ambassador Competition held by Quanta Culture and Education Foundation and received the “Best Promotion Award.” The competition took place over the course of 7 months and 10 Culture Ambassador Candidates were asked to choose among 10 middle schools and elementary schools for different tasks. Mr. Matos was sent to New Taipei City’s Jhanghe Junior High School for an exchange. Professor of the Chinese Language Center, Zhong-fang Cao, shared, “Alexander is such a diligent student. His exchange with Jhanghe Junior High school was themed around the aboriginals of Australia. He used drawings, pictures and traditional Australian music to give the students a deeper understanding of the culture.”

TKU Students Learn About Direct Trade Through Coffee Beans

【Jia-ling Liu, Lanyang Campus Report】The Department of Global Politics and Economics invited founder of The Lightened, Annie Huang, to speak on fair trade through her experience opening a coffee shop in Taipei. She expressed that all of the coffee beans at her shop arrive through direct trade from small farms of Haiti, Kenya and Panama. She pointed out that by doing direct trade with the farmers instead of going through distributors, farmers are able to make 20 times as much profit.

President Chang Wants Departments to Shine

【Zhao-yu Chen, Shao-qi Zhang Tamsui Campus Report】The Colleges of Engineering and Business Management recently held the 2015-16 First Semester Presidential Discussion. President Flora Chia-I Chang and the three university vice presidents met with the two deans of the colleges as well as department heads to discuss future developments and departmental modifications. On Dec. 29 the discussion consisted of the Departments of Civil Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. President Chang expressed, “It is my hope that the departments each display their unique traits through accomplishing clear objectives.”

TKU Promotes a Healthy Lifestyle

【Du Huan, Tamsui Campus Report】Last week the Sanitation and Fitness Division held an event for 4 days at the Black Swan Exhibition Hall in promotion of healthy living and the “Movie Enthusiasts” and “More Fruit” activities received great support. The event lasted from Dec. 28-31 and people vigorously crowded the area to partake in and encourage a fitter lifestyle on campus. The event informed spectators that people need an average of two pieces of fruit a day for healthy living.
