TKU and TECO Join Forces to Create New Programs

【Pin-jie Chen, Jia-ling Liu, Tamsui and Lanyang Campus Report】Tamkang University’s Office of Research and Development is working together with TECO to collaborate in the creation of new academic industry programs. Student internships will be established through three of TECO’s food service industries: Mos Burger, Royal Host and Fujio Food System. Together, TKU and Teco will offer two academic industry courses titled, “Food Quality Service Employment” and “Tourism Estate Employment.”

【Yi-mei Chen, Tamsui Campus Report】The Department of Overseas Student Counseling established the, “2016 Overseas Chinese Youth Taiwan Observation Learning Group,” bringing students of Chinese descent from various countries on a 21-day tour in Taiwan to enjoy the beautiful and unique scenery. This year the group of Chinese youth arrived from Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. The event officially began on Tamkang University’s Taipei Campus on Jan. 5. Director Laio, of the Department of Overseas Student Counseling, was invited to encourage the group members as their journey commenced.

Chemistry Mobile Starts Journey in Yilan

This year Tamkang University’s Chemistry Mobile, an educational vehicle used for the promotion of science, is beginning its tour around the island. The first stop of the chemistry tour was Yilan, on Jan 4. It made its way to elementary and juniors high schools within the inner city and on Jan. 5 it arrived at San Xing Junior High School. The demonstration consisted of dust explosions, the transformation of rubber balls into slime, colorful tadpoles and an underwater garden to explain to students the abundance of science in our daily lives.

【Tamkang Times】Tamkang University’s Chueh-sheng Memorial Library participated in Library Association of the Republic of China’s (LAROC) 2015 poster show competition under the theme, “The Phoenix Rises Again: The TKU Library Space Modification Plan” and won first place. The university has consecutively been honored with first place in this competition since 2010.

Flipped Classroom Read Off

【Yi-mei Chen, Tamsui Campus Report】In order to introduce students to the value and concepts of flipped classrooms, the Center for Learning and Teaching and the Chueh-sheng Memorial Library have joined together to promote the “Flipped Classroom Reading Contest.” The deadline for registration is May 1. The contest consists of reading books under the theme of flipped classrooms.

【Shi-qing Huang, Tamsui Campus Report】The Department of Mass Communication in cooperation with ECPAT Taiwan held a social marketing and implementation, spec work competition that emphasized the use of professional skills and services. The event was titled, “2016 Wings” and Professor of the Department of Mass Communication, Yu-pei ma, invited General Secretary of ECPAT Taiwan, Lily Lee, Yahoo’s Deputy Director of Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Kris Ou and General Supervisor of Cultural Industry Collection Co., Irene Chao, to act as judges in the competition of 7 groups made up of 34 students.

Math Day and Curriculum Innovation at TKU

【Zhi-yue Jiang, Ya-han Cao, Tamsui Campus Report】TKU Math Day and the 2015 Curriculum Innovation Design Competition are on their way! On Feb. 21 the Department of Mathematics will hold the Math Day event in the Science Building. There are estimated to be 60 high school students to participate in the various math-related activities. Director of the Department of Mathematics, Chi-chung Wen, expressed, “I’m hoping that Math Day will help to raise students’ comprehension of mathematics because currently the nation is lacking personnel with this necessary skill. This is designed to encourage students so that they may turn around this trend.” For the event, students will be given hand held computers to play math games, solve problems and do an interview simulation. Tamkang University’s Department of Mathematics will introduce the campus to the students and lead them to participate in the games.
