Yu-Lien Scholarship Continues to Illuminate Freshmen’s Dreams — Junior Students Move Forward with Gratitude

“We sincerely thank alumnus Hang-Chien Hsu for his support and generosity toward his alma mater, inspiring more junior students to strive forward together and continue this virtuous cycle!” At 10:00 a.m. on December 11, 2025, the Guidance Section of the Office of Student Affairs held the 2025 Academic Year Yu-Lien Scholarship Award Ceremony at the Chang Yeo-Lan Hall of the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center. The ceremony was presided over by President Huan-Chao Keh, with attendance by Academic Vice President Hui-Huang Hsu, Administrative Vice President Chun-Hung Lin, Vice President for International Affairs Hsiao-Chuan Chen, as well as first- and second-level administrators from relevant units, award recipients, and their families and friends. More than 300 participants gathered to witness alumnus Hang-Chien Hsu of the Graduate Institute of Management Sciences give back to his alma mater, benefiting younger students, and express heartfelt appreciation for his warm and benevolent contributions.

Hang-Chien Hsu established the Yu-Lien Scholarship in honor of his mother. Since 2020, he has donated a total of NTD 120 million, encouraging outstanding students with strong research potential to enroll at Tamkang University and assisting international students in pursuing their studies at Tamkang University with peace of mind. Beginning in September 2021, the scholarship has awarded NTD 20 million annually. Over the first four years, 785 students benefited, receiving scholarships ranging from NTD 20,000 to NTD 200,000. This year marked the fifth round of awards, with 50 incoming undergraduate and master’s/doctoral students (general students) each receiving NTD 200,000; 4 incoming international postgraduate students each receiving NTD 100,000; and 139 incoming international undergraduate students each receiving NTD 50,000.

President Keh expressed gratitude to Hsu for his long-standing, action-driven support of his alma mater. To date, Hsu’s cumulative donations have reached NTD 240 million. Beyond establishing high-value scholarships, the funds also supported the construction of the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center, creating a vital venue for advancing international education and enhancing the University’s academic reputation, an exemplary embodiment of the University motto, “Simplicity, Truthfulness, Firmness, and Perseverance.” President Keh congratulated all award recipients for standing out among their respective departments and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence and surpassing both themselves and their peers. He concluded by urging recipients to remain grateful, make good use of the scholarships, and, when successful in the future, give back to society and their alma mater to perpetuate this goodwill.

During the ceremony, Cun-Yong Huang, a first-year student in the Department of Information and Communication, delivered words of appreciation on behalf of the recipients. He shared that when he visited Tamkang University as a high school senior during a university expo and first entered the Chang Yeo Lan Hall, he was struck by the hall’s elegant name and comfortable environment, never imagining he would one day stand on the stage as an award recipient. Upon learning that both “Shou-Chlien” and “Yu-Lien” were named after Hang-Chien Hsu’s parents, he deeply felt that the scholarship embodies remembrance of parents, gratitude to the alma mater, and hope for future generations. “This spirit reminds me that success is not merely climbing upward alone but reaching back to bring more people forward together. If I am able in the future, I hope to continue this goodwill and pass it on to the next person in need.”

Gissela Celeste Ortiz, an international student from Paraguay and a first-year student in the Department of International Tourism Management, delivered her appreciation in English. She noted that receiving the scholarship provided not only material support but also profound encouragement. “This scholarship reminds me that all efforts have meaning; even when we feel uncertain, there are people who believe in our potential.” When she first arrived at Tamkang University, she naturally felt anxious about academics, daily life, and the future. However, with the assistance of the university's staff, she adapted smoothly and felt a sense of warmth and care far from home. The recognition reinforced her sense of responsibility: “In the future, I hope to give back to society with my own strength and extend a helping hand to others.
