"Tamkang Journal of Science and Engineering" and "Journal of Futures Studies" Win Airiti Taiwan Academic Communication Awards
The Department of Education and Futures Design's journal, Journal of Futures Studies, received the "Most Diverse Journal Award" in the Journal Category of the "2023 Airiti Taiwan Academic Communication Awards." The award was accepted by the Dean of the College of Education, Prof. Kuo-Hua Chen (right), on behalf of the journal.

Airiti held the 2023 Airiti Taiwan Academic Communication Awards on November 9 at the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation International Convention Center. The awards recognized top-ranked theses and their authors based on global download and citation frequency, aiming to raise awareness of these creators' academic contributions through the ceremony. Tamkang University's Tamkang Journal of Science and Engineering and the Department of Education and Futures Design's Journal of Futures Studies were awarded the "Most Diverse Journal" in the journal category. Dean of the College of Education and professor of the Department of Education and Futures Design, Prof. Kuo-Hua Chen, represented the department to accept the award. Additionally, alum Ya-Hui Chen from the Executive Master’s Program in Banking and Finance received the Best Communication Award in the Thesis Category for her work "The Impact of ESG and Financial Indicators on Stock Returns in Taiwan's Financial Industry." Yen-Hung Lin, a graduate of the AI Robotics Master’s Program in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, also won the same award for his thesis, "Design of a ChatGPT-Assisted Learning System."

Co-hosted by Tamkang University and Tasa Meng Corporation, the "Radiant Calligraphy and Painting: Ben-Hang Chang's Special Exhibition" (「翰墨燦燦－張炳煌書畫特展」) and "E-Transition to New Art: Master Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition" (「e轉新藝-名家書畫作品展」) are on display until February 4 of next year at the Art and Cultural Exhibition Space and boarding corridors in Zone D of Terminal 2 at Taoyuan International Airport. The exhibitions allow international travelers to appreciate the beauty of calligraphy during their arrival and departure. The opening ceremony and press conference were held on November 6 at 2 PM in the Art and Cultural Exhibition Space of Terminal 2, Zone D. Distinguished guests included Taoyuan International Airport Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang; Director of Aviation Police Bureau under National Police Agency, Ministry of Interior, Wen-Liang Chiu; Taipei Customs, CA, MOF Director Tai-An Chao; and China Pacific Catering Chairman Hwa-Kuan Chang, along with over 70 attendees who joined in celebrating the event.

14 Outstanding Youths: Exemplifying the Best Advocates for AI+SDGs

The list of recipients for the 2024 Academic Year Outstanding Youth Award has been announced, with a total of 14 students selected. The awardees were nominated by department mentors, instructors, and faculty members, with selections based on the proportional representation of each college. In addition to excelling academically, the outstanding youths demonstrated remarkable achievements in academic research, participation in various competitions, and community service.

Physics Department Achieves Another Milestone in International Academic Collaboration: 2 Papers Published in Top Physics and Chemistry Journals
The Chair of the Department of Physics, Prof. Cheng-Hao Chuang (left), collaborated with second-year Ph.D. student Carl Osby M. Mariano from the Doctoral Program in Applied Sciences and senior undergraduate Meng-Xun Tsai on an academic paper, which was published in an international journal.

Physics Department Chair, Professor Cheng-Hao Chuang led graduate students in publishing 2 journal papers in prominent international journals, namely "Atomic Insights into the Competitive Edge of Nanosheets Splitting Water" in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), which explains the competitive edge of nanosheets in water splitting from an atomic perspective, and "Operando X-ray and Mass Spectroscopy of Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO)-Mediated Cobalt Catalysts for Boosting the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction" in PRX Energy, which discusses how reduced graphene oxide promotes cobalt catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction through operando X-ray and mass spectroscopy analysis. JACS has an impressive impact factor of 14.5, while PRX Energy is a new journal that began accepting submissions in 2022 and will announce its impact factor in 2025.

International Students' Cultural Journey: Low-Carbon Sustainable Tour in Yilan
The International and Mainland Student Guidance Section of the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs organized the "Sustainable Low-Carbon Cultural Tour in Yilan," with one stop at the Luodong Forestry Culture Park to explore Taiwan's traditional forestry culture.

The International and Mainland Student Guidance Section of the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs organized the "Low-Carbon Sustainable Cultural Tour in Yilan" from November 9 to 10. Led by the Dean of International Affairs, Professor Chien-Mu Yeh, 100 faculty and students participated in the event, exploring various attractions in Yilan on foot. Through a diverse and enriching itinerary, the tour aimed to strengthen friendships among international students, provide a deeper understanding of Taiwanese culture, and contribute to sustainability and low-carbon efforts.

Professor Ahsan Kareem from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, United States, was invited by the Department of Civil Engineering to deliver a Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture on November 14 at 1:10 p.m. in the Chang Yeo Lan International Conference Hall of the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center. The lecture introduced the essence, intricacies, and applications of wind engineering under the title: "Wobbly Tall Deep and Long Span Structures: Historical Perspectives to Recent Advances and Beyond."

Invited by the Department of Civil Engineering, Professor Yukio Tamura, an Honorary Professor at Tokyo Polytechnic University in Japan, delivered a Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture on November 14 at 10:10 a.m. in the Chang Yeo Lan International Hall of the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center. His speech, titled "Mathematical Models for Understanding Phenomena: Physical View and Mind View," explored the development process of mathematical models for vortex-induced vibration phenomena of cylinders based on his own observations and reflections. Prof. Tamura encouraged the students in attendance to grasp the essence and mechanisms of phenomena and to appreciate the true charm of research.

U.S. State Department Official Visits Campus to Observe High School Students' Chinese Language Learning

The Chinese Language Center of the Office of Continuing Education hosts American students who received Chinese language scholarships from the U.S. Department of State. 21 American high school students came to Tamkang University this academic year to study Chinese. From November 7 to 9, Michele Peters, Director of the Youth Programs Division of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and Dr. Brian Gibson, Vice President of Language Programs at the American Councils for International Education (ACIE), visited Tamkang University to observe the implementation of the NSLI-Y program and to assess the students' learning and living conditions.

The 92nd School Affairs Meeting was held on November 1 at 2:00 PM in the Chang Yeo Lan International Conference Hall of the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center, chaired by President Huan-Chao Keh. Attendees included Vice President for Academic Affairs Hui-Huang Hsu, Vice President for Administrative Affairs Chun-Hung Lin, Vice President for International Affairs Hsiao-Chuan Chen, first-level supervisors, second-level teaching and administrative supervisors, faculty, and student representatives. The meeting was broadcast simultaneously to the Taipei and Lanyang campuses via video conferencing.

Founder Chang and Yueh-O Kuo Honored with Special Recognition by Taiwan Basketball Hall of Fame
Founder Chang, a passionate supporter of basketball, inaugurated the faculty and staff basketball tournament at Tamkang University's Student Activity Center in 1975.

The Taiwan Basketball Hall of Fame Association recently announced the third batch of inductees. On November 2 at 3:00 PM, the induction ceremony was held at the Sports Administration Building of the Ministry of Education. Founder Dr. Clement C.P. Chang and retired professor Yueh-O Kuo from the Office of Physical Education were honored with the "Special Recognition" award for their contributions to Taiwan's basketball community. Kuo attended the event in person to receive the award for herself and Founder Chang.

Wearing a shirt purchased during his visit to Taiwan more than a decade ago, Professor Monte Cassim, President of Akita International University (AIU), delivered a Tamkang Clement and Carrie Chair Lecture on November 4 at 1:00 PM in the Chang Yeo Lan International Conference Hall of the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center. During his speech, he invited Chairperson Flora Chia-I Chang, an old acquaintance seated in the audience and with whom he had once taken a commemorative photo, saying, "Could we use our language-oriented programs to collaborate across different disciplines? We might create an exciting modern society."

Chairperson Flora Chia-I Chang also attended the event as a distinguished guest, witnessing this moment of honor.
