2004 GRANT MONEY AWARDED TO TKU EXCEEDS ONE MILLION NT DOLLAR

According to the Office of Research and Development, there are 78 TKU faculty members whose research projects rewarded by outside bodies exceeded one million NT dollars in 2004, a considerable improvement compared with last year and the year before—there had been 60 and 65 faculty members respectively. These 78 faculty members will be congratulated and receive a plaque inscribed with “The Light of Tamkang” from the Founder, Dr. Clement Chang at the annual year-end faculty and staff celebration party on Dec. 28.

YEAR-END PARTY TO PAINT THE TOWN RED ON DECEMBER 28

The annual year-end faculty and staff celebration party will be held on Dec. 28 this year. As usual, there will be a tambala to highlight the party interspersed with some award ceremonies and refreshing performances. Such an occasion, as always, provides a relaxing and joyous atmosphere that allows everyone to let their hair down after a hard year’s work.

COLD FRONTS HAVE FIRED UP A THIRST FOR TASTY WINE

EXHIBITION OF TAIWAN AND MATSU CULTURE TO BE UNVEILED ON WEDNESDAY

Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center will open an exhibition on Taiwan and Matsu Culture this Wednesday, January 5. The opening ceremony is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. on Friday of the same week and will be presided by Flora Chang, the President of TKU. Even though the winter vacation is about to begin soon, the exhibition will run until the end of the month (27th) so that those students who do not return home immediately will gain this special opportunity to appreciate a piece of Taiwan and Matsu’s arts and cultural history.

A SHANGRI-LA IN TAMKANG IS WITHIN REACH

The final speech of the "Welcoming Tamkang 4th Wave" lecture series was held last Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Ching Sheng International Conference Hall. The theme of this talk, "A New Shangri-La in Tamkang", dealt with the prospect of harmonizing four of TKU's campuses (Tamsui, Taipei, Lanyang and Cyber) so as to create a truly comprehensive university that is classic and modern at the same time. Tai Wan-chin, the Dean of the College of International Studies and Hsu Ting-chi, the Dean of the College of Technology were invited to be the discussants of this particular issue, whereas Feng Chao-kang, the Vice President of the Academic Affairs moderated the talk.

JOB GUARANTEED AFTER GRADUATION? NOT IF YOU'RE AN ACCOUNTING MAJOR

The Department of Accounting has been hot for years. Its graduates and graduates-to-be never seem to have problems in attaining licenses or in landing a good job. For instance, the results of the 2005 national accountant license exam and accounting clerk license exam that were just released not long ago indicate that 19 TKU graduates and students had passed them. To top that, 165 of the 240 graduates-to-be have been snatched by the four heavyweight accounting firms in Taiwan: Deloitte, Touche & Tohmatsu (DTT), KPMG, Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers respectively. Some of the students will have a hard time deciding which one to work for when graduation comes along since they have been requested by more than one firm!

SEMESTER RECESS BEGINS ON JAN. 10 AND ENDS ON FEB. 20

After the finals this week, the winter vacation officially begins on Jan. 10. The Office of Academic Affairs will make the results of the finals available online or by phone between Jan. 14 and 21. Students are able to select their courses for the next semester with both media between Jan. 10 and 18. The university will be in session again on Feb. 21.

STUDENT CLUBS ARE BUSY ORGANIZING WINTER CAMPS

Nearly 30 clubs are organizing winter camps that will start from next week onwards, according to the Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section. These camps will serve as a way of connecting all existing members and a relaxing occasion to recharge.

TWO TKU SERVICING CLUBS HAVE WON AWARDS FROM THE UNITED DAILY

The Children's Welfare Association and the Torch-light Club of TKU have been awarded by the 12th College Youth Servicing Clubs Awards sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of the United Daily. They have won NT$ 20,000 and 10,000 award money respectively. The latter also has won an award at the 12th Outstanding College Servicing Clubs Awards, an event that was sponsored by the Distinguished Citizens Society (DCS), winning them another NT$ 10,000 prize money.
