FOUR PROFESSORS’ RESEARCHES PATENTED

Once again TKU’s faculty demonstrates rich achievements of research. Four professors’ research products acquired national patents: Yeh Fung-huei’s (Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering) “Integrated Control Apparatus of Computer Platform for the Blind and Transferring Interface of Braille Display Monitor,” Lu Po-chien’s (Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering) “Triple-Vane Mechanical Heart Valve,” Lin Meng-shan’s (Department of Chemistry) “Auto-Sampling Electrochemical Sensing Strip with Screen-Printed Three Electrodes”, Huang Jiung-yao’s (former professor at Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering) “Multi-Monitor Simultaneous Display System of Virtual Reality.” Professor Huang Jiung-yao switched to Chungcheng University last summer vacation, co-owning the patent with TKU.

THIRTY-THREE DEPARTMENTS TO RECRUIT ACADEMIC STAFF

For the next academic year thirty-three departments are to recruit forty-eight full-time staff of assistant professors and upwards. However, recruitment for the new Lanyang Campus will wait until the Ministry of Education has given the go-ahead.

GLPPC INVITES DR FLORA C. I. CHANG TO BE CO-DIRECTOR

The Global Leadership Professor Promotion Committee (GLPPC), promoted by the National Chiao Tung University, has recently invited President Flora C. I. Chang of Tamkang University to be one of its three co-directors: the other two are President Chang Chuen-Yen of National Chiao Tung University and former President of National United University, Dai Cheng-Fang.

TAMKANG FORUM DISCUSSED TAIWAN-RUSSIAN RELATION

Tamkang Forum was held on Thursday, December 23, at 9:30 a.m. in the Alumni Reunion Hall of the Taipei Campus: fifteen scholars gathered to discuss the prospective development of relationship between Taiwan and Russia. Former ROC prime minister and current president of Taiwan-Russia Association, Chang Jun-hsiung, said in his opening speech: “The current economic reforms in Russia are encouraging Taiwan to develop economic ties with Russia.” Mr. Chang also emphasized the importance of a wide-angled view of the world and of international cooperation.

CHI-MAO LEE LED ARTIST DELEGATION TO VISIT MALAYSIA FOR CHARITY SALES

Chi-mao Lee, Director of Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center (CCFAC), led a delegation of 21 noted Taiwanese artists, “Delegation of Advocating Chinese Calligraphy and Painting,” to visit Malaysia for charity sales. They held exhibitions and charity sales which amount to 1,700,000 NT dollars, in Penang, Kuala Lumpu, and Sabah for three days. They also donated 2,400,000 NT dollars-worth artwork to the Taipei Schools and General Office of Malaysian Alumni Association in the two cities.

SIX DEPARTMENTS SPONSOR A JOINT CHRISTMAS DANCING PARTY

NEW STUDENT ASSEMBLY: SPEAKER YANG YU-TENG, VICE-SPEAKER LIN CHIA-CHUN

The new Student Assembly elected Yang Yu-teng, a junior in the Dept. of Management Sciences and Decision Making, as Speaker, and Lin Chia-chun, a freshman in the Dept. of Physics as Vice-Speaker on Dec. 23. Then, student Speaker Lin appointed Chen Yi-chi, a junior in the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, as Secretary General. Yang Yu-teng pointed out that in order to channel the students’ opinions, he wanted to set up publicity and information boxes both in Business building and Student Association.

THE EXCHANGE STUDENTS OF TKU HAD A WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE AT REITAKU INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

The Reitaku International Night held annually took place in a grand manner at Student Activity Center on the night of Dec. 17, 2004. The exchange students from all over the world and the Japanese students of Reitaku Class went all out for their performance, filling the campus with exotic atmosphere on Friday night. Asides from Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Feng Chao-kang, Dean of College of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Dr. Sung Mei-hua, and Chair of Dept. of Japanese Dr. Peng Chuen-yang, a large number of students interested in foreign cultures also gathered at Activity Center to enjoy the great show of these foreign students.

SHIH CHU-YUN WON THE FOURTH CATEGORY CHAMPION IN THE NATIONAL CHUNG CHENG CUP JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP

Hosted by the Chinese Taipei Judo Association, the National Chung Cheng Cup Judo Championship was held from December 15th to 18th in Taipei Gymnasium. TKU’s Judo Team had performed extremely well, with Shih Chu-yun, a sophomore in Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, winning the championship in the women group, category 4.
