37 CLASS ADVISERS RECEIVE RECOGNITION FOR THEIR DEDICATION

The academic system in TKU is such that it assigns one teacher to each class as its class adviser in order to have a closer supervision on a vast number of students. Each year, the university elects some of them based on the recommendation of respective colleges to be awarded with the Outstanding Class Advisers Awards for their dedicated work to various student affairs. This year 37 of such teachers have been elected and will receive their awards in a public ceremony next Thursday, April 21. This ceremony will be held during a symposium on the quality of counseling work for class advisers and counselors organized by the Office of Student Affairs.

TKU PRESIDENT LEARNS ABOUT THE WORLD OF MICROSOFT

ALL ENGLISH LECTURES PREPARE STUDENTS FOR STUDYING ABROAD

Over 40 students of the 2C class in the sophomore year of the Department of International Trade will go abroad to study for one year. They are the first students in this department that have had all lectures in English in the past two years. It is a pilot project aiming to enhance students’ English ability, which in turn would provide them the motivation for going abroad. After nearly two years, some of them are ready, as they have already received a place at the universities on the Junior Abroad Program, either through TKU or individual channel.

FORUM ON COMMERCIAL MARINE LIFE HELD ON FRIDAY

The Life Science Development Center (LSDC) of the College of Sciences will be holding a meeting entitled “2005 Forum on Commercial Marin Life Technology” this Friday (April 15th ) at Rm. Q409 of Chung-ling Chemistry Hall introducing the wide applications of bio-technology in commercial fisheries.

TKU TO HOST UNIVERSITY EXPO

The 2005 Exposition for Taiwanese universities and graduate schools will be hosted by TKU, which is scheduled on July 16th and 17th with four venues in Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Taiwan to be opened simultaneously. The venue in the eastern part of Taiwan is new this year so as to meet the needs of students in that part of the island. In the past, they had to travel far to other parts of Taiwan in order to understand what higher educational institutes could offer to them. This year the four venues that will host the Expo for future college/graduate school students are the Stadium at the National Taiwan University for northern region, the Stadium of Chung-hsing University for central region, KaoHsiung Business Exhibition Center for the southern region and the County Stadium of the Hua-liang County.

FOUR EATERIES BLACKLISTED BY PUBLIC HEALTH BUREAU

TKU has started it annual inspection of the food sanitation standard of the restaurants and eateries nearby since March 29th. During this time, students working at the Sanitation and Health Care Section (SHCS) of the university have been cooperating with the inspectors assigned by the Public Health Bureau (PHB) of Taipei County Government to assess the sanitation and food safety on and off the campus. Some tentative results have emerged from their investigation: The cleanest three are as usual—Lai Chi Mei Noodle Eastery, Jia Wei Fast Food and Da Lu Noodle Eatery; however, The last four on the list are An Ko-yan Cantonese chichen and Meat Eatery, Da Chi-co Fast Food Eatery, Ji-hsiang Eatery and Hong Kong Da Yuan Fast Food Restaurant located in Da Tian Liao is the last on the list due to its poor sanitation standard found in the kitchen.

ROCKETED PERIODICAL FEES FORCE THE LIBRARY TO SEEK ALTERNATIVES

The subscription fees of major periodicals have rocketed in the past five years, for example, in 2000, it was still possible to subscribe 2,230 different periodicals for a budget of NT$ 35,780,000, whereas in 2004, it required NT$ 56,110,000 for 2,602 periodicals. In light of this situation, the main library of TKU organized a symposium last week (April 3rd) to discuss this issue and countermeasures. During which, the director of the library, Huang Hong-chu gave a talk on the adoption of Open Access (OA) system in order to manage the increased price without comprising too much the quality and quantity of the periodicals university subscribes each year.

HARMONICA CLUB WINS THIRD PLACE IN STUDENT MUSIC CONTEST

The Harmonica Student Club of TKU won the third place among the universities in the Northern Taiwan in a music event, “National Student Music Contest”, organized by the Ministry of Education, sometime ago. In this category, there were 10 teams altogether with National Taiwan Normal University winning the first place, followed by National Taiwan University (NTU).

TAEKWONDO CLUB WINS MANY ACCOLADES

In the Fu-Da Taekwondo Cup, hosted by the Fu-ren Catholic University, TKU won 2 silver medals and 4 bronzes. Kuo Jia-Hwa of the Department of Public Administration together with Wu Chung-hsuan of the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering are the two that won the silver. The former, who was a gold medalist last year, put on a brave performance, but still lost by minute points at the final. She was not happy with clinching the second place and swore to return next year to reclaim her title.

ROLLER-SKATE CLUB RECRUITS NEW MEMBERS

In an effort of promoting sports among high school and elementary school pupils in the local community, the Roller-skate Hockey Club of TKU goes around to Taipei First Girls High School and Ta-tung Senior High School as well as Danshui Yu-ying Elementary School for two hours each week to teach kids how to roller skate. This effort is part of the project organized jointly by TKU and the Ministry of Education in having university clubs to guide the development of clubs in elementary and middle schools.
