TKU NXT LEGO Winter Courses
The TKU NXT LEGO Winter Course allowed children to apply their practical building and design skills to assemble a series of robots.

During the recent winter holidays, the TKU Division of Continuing Education held a number of beginner and advanced ‘NXT LEGO Robot’ courses, with a total of approximately 90 students taking part. The classes utilized NXT LEGO materials to provide young students practice in building and creating things with their hands while having fun.

The 2011 Tamkang Visual Art Workshop Photo Exhibition

The Tamkang Visual Art Workshop is set to once again hold its annual photography exhibition. The display will be held at the Black Swan Exhibition Hall from the 1st to the 4th of March (10am to 8pm), and will revolve around the thematic phrase “What if…” The images displayed will be surreal pictures of humans doing and experiencing things that they could not do in real life, things that usually only exist in one’s imagination.

Tomorrow will be Better

In order to assist students in planning for the future, the office of Student Affairs recently held a life guidance activity week called “Tomorrow will be Better.” Held at Tamkang’s Black Swan Exhibition Hall from February 21-25, the event included a book fair; a poster exhibition; a life-counseling stand; a life discovery lecture; an inspirational film screening; and a lecture on discovering one’s personal strengths. The poster exhibition comprised 40 large-sized posters, made up of amusing diagrams and text, which aimed to help students navigate their future career and life paths, and better understand their personal strengths and qualities. The life-counseling stand, on the other hand, gave students the chance to play a fun and lively ‘Life card game’, and in doing so, explore in more depth their desired career and future ambitions.

Tamkang Student Kicks her Way into the Headlines
Department of Information and Communication student, Tsai Yun-rui, with her deft martial arts moves, has become somewhat of an idol among female students at TKU. Despite her timid nature, she is also popular among the male students: “I feel much more comfortable practicing Tae Kwon Do than speaking to guys”.

Tsai Yun-rui is a first year Information and Communication student. Her slender build and endearing snaggletooth smile have won her the affection of many male classmates. But despite her diminutive appearance, Yun-Rui is one student you don’t want to mess with. Yun-Rui holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which means that for her, performing flying sidekicks and spinning reverse kicks is an everyday occurrence. She is most in her element when practicing Tae Kwon Do: “I feel confident when doing Tae Kwon Do.” If attacked on the street, however, “I think running away would be the fastest option,” she said while laughing.

TKU Student Wins Prize for Short Story
Third Year Department of Chinese student Sun Yu-xiu won a prize for her imaginative short story ‘A Strange Incident in a Schoolyard’

Recently, third year Department of Chinese student Sun Yu-xiu entered a Chinese Literature competition under her penname ‘Muxin’, which literally means ‘Dusk and Dawn’. Out of 39 entrants in her category (strange sci-fi short story), she claimed first place to win an NT $30,000 cash prize and an iPad. Among a total of 188 written piece and 165 competitors, Tamkang students won 7 prizes in a variety of categories.

Several months ago, the Director of the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, Li Chi-Mao, began designing the exterior face of an art gallery, which was to be built in Gao Tong County, China. In December last year, construction began. The gallery, which will be called the ‘Li Chi-Mao Art Gallery’, will not only showcase a diverse range of artwork, but will also serve as an essential hub for the interflow of art and culture between Taiwan and Mainland China.

TKU Prof. Jong-Shenq Guo Receives Research Honor

Each year, the National Science Council rewards teachers who made exceptional contributions to the corpus of scientific research. The recipients receive a certificate and NT $300,000 per year for three years. This year, TKU’s Dr. Jong-Shenq Guo, an esteemed professor in the Department of Mathematics, was among the recipients.

The Flexible Subsidy Initiative

In response to the Ministry of Education’s Flexible Subsidy Plan, Tamkang itself implemented a Flexible Subsidy Initiative, which took effect Feb. 1, 2011. Dr. York W. Chen, a newly arrived assistant professor at the TKU Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, commented that “the Flexible Study Initiative is great. It encourages scholars to be proactive”.

Tamkang Ranked Among World’s Top 300

According to the Webometrics’ Ranking Web of World Universities, Tamkang University is among the best 300 universities in the world. In Webometrics’ bi-annual assessment of over 20,000 universities worldwide, Tamkang placed 285th, which represents a mammoth improvement from its 567th placing last year. Its placing puts Tamkang first among all private universities in Taiwan. The Webometrics’ Ranking Web of World Universities assesses universities around the world for criteria such as internet presence visibility, amount of published scholarly (rich) files, and number of references to published scholarly articles in Google Scholar. This year, in each of the categories listed above, Tamkang performed better than in previous years.

Teaching Excellence Subsidy Announced

The Ministry of Education recently announced the subsidy totals they will be distributing to a select group of Taiwanese Universities in 2011 as part of the Teaching Excellence Project. In 2011, Tamkang University will receive subsidy stipends amounting to NT $45.1 million. This represents an increase of NT $21.1 million from last year’s total.
