TKU Applies for University Self Evaluation Program

【Reported by Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】The University Self Evaluation Program will begin in 2014. The Office of Quality Assurance and Audit applied for the University Self Evaluation program at the Ministry of Education in August, then followed up by mailing the requested details of the project in November. Currently TKU is still awaiting their response. The Chief Audit Executive, Di-ching Pai, stated, “The program should pass through smoothly. When the University Self Evaluation Program has officially begun, there will be an announcement. It could be as early as the next semester or sometime closer to the start of the new year. The College of Engineering has already received approval from the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan and in the near future every department in the university will be evaluated.

Next Semester TKU Begins New Cross-Curriculum Courses

【Reported by Qiao-ting Zhao, Jing-ya Su, Yi-jun Yang, Tamkang Times】In order to cultivate students’ professional career ability, capacity and understanding of the market trends, Tamkang University has designed majors that cover multiple departments and career industries related to the world market. Tamkang University is offering academic study and research that crosses into the fields of technology, science and engineering that assess the industrial world as part of the educational curriculum. Currently TKU’s cross-curriculum program contains 40 credits and has enrolled 300 students that have chosen to major in such related fields. This semester the College of Engineering has offered courses for smartphone technology and eagerly anticipates cultivating students for the industry of robotics development and design.

Alumni Returns to TKU to Give Lecture on Solar Energy

【Reported by Bo-xian Lu, Tamkang Times】Tamkang University students are incredible! Third-year student from the Department of Global Politics and Economics, Ding-yu Chen, has been approved to participate in the overseas program, “Students in Humanities and Social Sciences to Study Abroad.” Ding-yu Chen is the only student from a junior college to be selected for this competitive program that will be taking place in Toronto, Canada. He stated, “I have always been very interested in international affairs and I happened to be searching online for related news when I found this study abroad program. I decided to try it out because I really wanted more overseas experience. I believe my experience with the study abroad program in Australia has given me the qualifications for this opportunity. I am grateful for everyone’s support and encouragement.”

【Reported by Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】Final exams will be followed by winter break and 26 military groups will form the Winter Break Service Team, extending their services all across Taiwan. On the 20th of this month there will be a flag presentation to encourage the troops before they are sent off. It’s important for us to give them our hope, love and support so that they will be able to extend it to others through their volunteer services around the nation. 25 of the teams will be volunteering their services to the many elementary and junior high schools around Taiwan and one team will travel to Thailand to extend their services. A member of the Extracurricular Academic Innovation Group, Li-chen Su, expressed that this was his first time going to Thailand and he plans to teach Chinese language and a computer course. Everyone is welcome to come to the ceremony to give these volunteers our support on January 20th.

【Reported by Jing-ya Su, Yi-feng Lu, Tamkang Times】A student meeting was held by the Student Autonomous Management Organization on January 3rd to discuss the topic, “Making the System into Reality.” This discussion not only involved the creation and governing of student groups, but also took a deeper look into the concepts and methods of self-governing a student group. Nearly 80 students from 16 different universities came together to share information and experience as they figured out new ways to improve and develop various student organizations. Dean of Student Affairs, Po-yuan Kao, stated, “These student conferences are the best way for students to express their voice and come into an understanding of their potential on campus. I hope that this particular discussion will open new doors for organization development and let student organizations hold more autonomous activities.”

Tamkang World Forum For Youth Leaders Takes Place On January 20th

【Reported by Yu-pin Lin, Tamkang Times】From January 20th to the 21st, the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs (OICSA) will be holding a discussion for the Tamkang World Forum for Youth Leaders in the Business and Management Building B302A. This discussion has been titled, “The Prospects of the World” and will address issues such as world peace, democracy, politics, economics, biology and culture. The main point of the meeting is to widen the international perspective of students and strengthen the relationships and cooperation between sister universities.

A sales planning press conference was held on January 10th, lead by instructor Yu-pei Ma, who invited Secretary General of Federation of the Welfare of the Elderly, Yu-Chin Wu, Supervisor of Circulation Services, Irene Chao, Vice President of Jet-Go Consulting Group Jing-ning Chen and Dean of Mass Communications, Huei-chun Chi. 【Reported by Wen-yuan Zheng, Tamkang Times】On January 7th the Department of Human Resources held the “First Annual Retirement Tea Party,” where 6 retirees were invited: Professor of the Department of Chinese Language, Cheng-hui Lu, Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Su-feng Chien, Professor of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Chao-kang Feng, Assistant Professor of the Department of Japanese Language, Masateru Takatsu, Lecturer from the Department of Japanese Language, Chiyou Kuroshima, and member of the Counseling Section, Hsing-hsing Chang. President Flora Chia-I Chang began by expressing words of appreciation and handing out souvenirs. Also in attendance was Chairman of the Board of the United Association of Retired Alumni, Yun-shan Lin, Head of the Employee Welfare Committee, Tung Wan, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Guo-hsing Yu, the Vice President of Administration, Po-yuan Kao, the Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai and almost 100 faculty members and coworkers. During the bittersweet event, all of the retirees spoke words of appreciation and gratitude.
