The door opens in the office of the Graduate Institute of European Studies(GIES) , causing the serious discussion of laws and regulations to come to a halt. Director of the GIES, Li-chuan Chen, turns to see a camera and immediately smiles to make a hand gesture and silly pose, completely creating a joyful, relaxing atmosphere. Li-chuan Chen then stated, “A good teacher can change lives.” She pointed out that the impact a teacher has on development far surpasses the academic region. Therefore she has always compelled students to continue to ask questions, persevere and not hesitate to ask for help when it’s needed.

【Jia-ling Liu, Lanyang Campus Report】The College of Global Development held the annual Beginning Semester Ceremony on Sept. 15, drawing around 700 teachers and students. Dean of the College of Global Development, Ay-hwa Andy Liou, lead the students in song before giving the inspirational speech titled, “Opportunity and Determination.” In his speech he covered Lanyang’s special all-English core curriculum, the junior overseas study program and the student dorms. He also mentioned the yearly dormitory tradition that allows students to get to know each other better, forming closer relationships. In the end, Ay-hwa Liou asked students to treasure their time at the university, including resources, practical study methods and the diverse global perspective TKU provides.

In order to cultivate exceptional future personnel, Tamkang University continues to establish a bridge with the leaders of the ever-changing global market. The Department of International Business Management and the Cross-Strait Association for Advance Culture Creativity held the “Cross-Strait Young Entrepreneurs Exchange Forum” in the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall on Sept. 17.

Professor Koji Murata (right), President of Doshisha University in Japan, brought a team of representatives to TKU on Sept. 11 for a sister school exchange. Accompanying the university president was Section Manager, Yuichi Tanaka, University Secretary, Shinji Akagi and Mrs. Rui-lian Gao of the Office of Taiwan Affairs. Doshisha University officially signed an exchange agreement with TKU in May of 2010 and has maintained a vigorous cooperation for the past 5 years.

【Tamkang Times】Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has listed the latest “World University Rankings by Subject” and Tamkang University has placed in the top 300 in the fields of art and literature. Aside from National Taiwan University, National Sun Yat-sen University and National Taiwan Normal University, TKU is the only private university to find itself in such a high ranking (See more data at http://www.topuniversities.com/). The ranking index was based on articles produced by universities and academic reputation, then divided into 5 fields of study and 36 subjects.

【Ting-yu Su, Tamsui Campus Report 】The Ministry of Education will award academic professionals for their service of 10,20,30 and 40 years on Sept. 25. The professionals that will be recognized at Tamkang University include one member for 40 years, 9 members for 30 years, 31 members for 20 years, and 14 members for 10 years. 40-year member of the university, Professor Wen-jwu Wang, expressed, “Academic work is practical and really very interesting. Yet, the achievements of the students are the greatest reward a professor could ever have.”
