A Cup of Coffee with the Former University President

If you’ve ever hung out near the Heien Coffee Shop located next to the Family Mart on campus, it’s possible you spotted former Tamkang University President, Yea-hong Chen. Former President Chen was also an honored professor of the Department of Spanish. In the year 1956, he was an exchange student abroad. Born in 1934, the former president still gets a sparkle in his eye as he remembers his days abroad. He laughed while explaining, “In those days, the biggest pastime in Europe was just hanging out and chatting in the coffee shops after class.”

Culture Week at TKU

【Kai-jun Lin, Tamsui Campus Report】For Culture Week, 15 Tamkang University alumni groups put on the “Cultural Merchandise Anniversary” exhibition on Hai Bao Street. Last week, even amongst the drizzling rain, the diverse alumni groups celebrated the 30th anniversary of this event, through sales of different modern products related to heritage and tradition. There were vendors selling crafts and hot items of all the different regions in Taiwan including Taoyuan, Tai Chung, Hua Lien, Tai dung, Ping Dong and more. The sale was met with great success as the vendor selling tea eggs sold 1,300 eggs in only three days.

Taiwan’s Strategic Role in the Asian Economy

【Pin-jie Chen, Tamsui Campus Report】The College of Business and Management invited Dean of the Chung-hua Institution for Economic Research, Shu-wu Chung, to give a lecture for the Global Finance Discussion course. The lecture took place on Mar. 8 in B713 and the honored speaker discussed “The Attack of China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) Economic Rise.” The main point of the lecture was finding the best role and strategy for Taiwan amongst this Asian economic rise.

Peering into the Future

【Bo-jun Zhuang, Shao-qi Zhang, Tamsui Campus Report】The Graduate Institute of Future Studies held the “Second Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Futures Network” from Mar. 10-11 in the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall. The international forum invited 30 educators from 15 different countries of the Asia-Pacific region to discuss possible future ideas and events involving society, small businesses and industries along with possible issues and challenges. This academic exchange gave an opportunity to share invaluable research and experience.

The Genio Dance Troupe Hits the Stage at TKU

Tamkang’s season of art was celebrated in the Carrie Chang Music Hall on Mar. 10 and the leader of the Genio Dance Troupe, Lian-huan Ho, began the opening ceremony her artistic story, “About Love, Dance, Land and Life.” She introduced that her dance was a blend of the indigenous Bunun People of Taiwan and Flamenco Dance, which was created to encourage the victims of the the devastating typhoon, Morakot. She passionately displayed her emotions in a graceful, powerful dance for 10 minutes, invigorating the audience.

Latin American Students Get Close Look at Taiwanese Culture

The E-learning Executive Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies welcomed 14 Latin American Students last week for their participation in the second-year of study. They were also able to absorb and enjoy Taiwanese culture as they visited the Li Tien-lu Hand Puppet Historical Museum and the Gold Museum.

President Chang has Prosperous Visit in Australia

【Zhao-yu Chen, Tamsui Campus Report 】President Flora Chia-I Chang lead an academic expedition to Australia, from Mar. 1-4 to participate in the 2016 Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE). Accompanying her was Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, Dean of the College of Engineering, Chii-dong Ho, Dean of the College of Business and Management, Chien-liang Chiu, Director of the Department of Economics, Tun-kung Cheng, and member of the Office of International and Cross Strait Affairs, Ching-yi Li.
