TKU TO SET UP COLLEGE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION TO PROMOTE LIFELONG EDUCATION

Regulations of College of Continuing Education, Tamkang University (TKU) were formally approved in the 87th School Administrative Meeting held on May 30, 2003, in which Public Service Center (PSC) and Extension Education Center (EEC) have been decided to merge into one unit to take charge of teaching and administrative support for in-service programs and continue making efforts to promote lifelong education.

ESTABLISHMENT OF 3 RESEARCH CENTERS PASSED

Regulations for setting up three research centers were formally approved at the 87th Administrative Meeting. Tamsui Campus will step forward towards a research-oriented university. Three proposed centers are European Union Research Center (EURC), Nano Technology Research Center (NTRC), and Instrument and Experiment Center (IEC). The Center for Futures Studies will be merged into Graduate Institute of Futures Studies (GIFS).

TKU TO EARMARK OVER NT$20 MILLION BUDGET TO BUY NMR

College of Sciences, after obtaining the approval of President Chang Horng-jinh, planned to purchase a nuclear magnet resonance (NMR) to upgrade the teachers’ research effects. The instrument would cost between NT$23 million and NT$26 million. It will be placed at the new “Instrument and Experiment Center”.

VEEP FOR ADMINISTRATIVE AFFAIRS FLORA C.I. CHANG ENCOURGES STAFF MEMBERS TO PURSUE ADVANCED STUDIES

Vice President for Administrative Affairs Dr. Flora C. I. Chang exhorted staff members of teaching units to pursue their advanced studies. Chang also instructed that staff members of teaching units and administrative units would mutually take turns so as to be familiar with each other’s business. Chang made the remarks after presiding over a three-round symposium on total quality management (TQM) to staff members of teaching units held on May 23, 27 and June 3, respectively.

OUTCOMES OF EVALUATION OF STUDENT CLUBS: 9 CLUBS WIN THE MOST OUTSTANDING AWARD

Results of evaluation of student clubs were formally available. A total of nine clubs won the most outstanding award while 31 student clubs were graded as excellent award. Among them, Kanfu Club and Chinese Music Club have won such an honor for five consecutive years.

TKU FACULTY JOINING ANTI-SARS R&D WORK: TAITA NO. 1 PROVED TO BE EFFECTIIVE TO DESTROY SARS VIRUS

Lee Shih-yuan, Chair of Department of Chemistry, and Chu Shu-fang, student of Graduate Institute of Chemistry in Doctoral Program, joined a research team chiefly comprising National Taiwan University (NTU) faculty and students to conduct SARS research program. The team has successfully worked out an anti-SARS organic synthesis, which at present, has been proved as one of the effective materials to fight against SARS virus in the world. The newly founded organic synthesis has been named as “Taita No. One”.
