MARCHING TOWARD THE 4TH WAVE: DRAWING UP A BLUEPRINT FOR TKU's FUTURE

“TKU will be sailing toward the Fourth Wave in the year 2005,” Dr. Clement Chang, Founder of TKU, instructed at the Seminar on Teaching and Administrative Innovations, on Saturday Oct. 25, 2003. He blueprinted the future TKU as a multi-function global university which answers to the multiple needs of the twenty-first century, and requested the ten colleges of the university to set up short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans for the massive undertaking, which will get started next spring.

TKU'S PUBLISHED PAPERS ARE NO. 1 AMONG PRIVATE COMPREHENSIVE UNIVERSITIES

According to the statistics announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) last week, Tamkang University was ranked 14th of the 154 colleges and universities with a total of 327 papers listed in SCI, SSCI, EI. TKU won the first place among the private universities except for three private ones with medical schools－Chang Gung University, Kaohsiung Medical University, and China Medical College.

MORE THAN FORTY RESEARCH PROJECTS FROM TKU PROFESSORS PATENTED

Many of the TKU researchers have obtained patents, adding up to more than forty cases, according to Office of Research and Development. Founder Clement Chang and President Horng-jinh Chang held a banquet for some of these distinguished scholars recently.

LIN MENG-SHAN RECEIVES NATIONAL SCIENCE COUNCIL TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AWARD

Professor Lin Meng-shan of the Chemistry Department recently received the NT$300,000 National Science Council Technology Transfer Award. The fifteen researchers winning the second Technology Transfer Award come from various academic institutions, only two of which, Tamkang and Feng Chia, are private universities.

TKU CHINESE MUSIC CLUB AND TORCH WELFARE CLUB, RECOGNIZED AS “EXCELLENT” AND “EXTRAORDINARY,”

The TKU Chinese Music Club and Torch Welfare Club stood out from among all recommended college student clubs nationwide in a clubs evaluation held by the Ministry of Education. TKU Chinese Music Club was recognized as “Excellent” alongside four other clubs, and the Torch Welfare Club was placed as “Extraordinary”; they won medals and cash prizes $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. Minister of Education, Dr. Jong-Tsun Huang, attended this award ceremony on October 19 in I-Shuo University, Kaohsiung.

CULTIVATING A SECOND SPECIALTY AND ENHANCING COMPETITIVENESS:

Due to the difficulty of finding a job and the increasing numbers of the unemployed in recent years, many students apply for a minor or double major to cultivate a second specialty and promote their working capability. According to the Office of Academic Affairs, there are 453 students who applied for a minor or double major in TKU.

SYMPOSIUM OF THE INTERLIBRARY COOPERATION AND LIBRARIAN EXPERIENCE SHARING TO BE HELD ON THURSDAY

Sponsored by Minister of Education and TKU’s Information Processing Center and Department of Educational Technology, “Symposium of the Interlibrary Cooperation and Librarian Experience Sharing” will be hold at Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall this Thursday and Friday (Oct. 30-31). The topic of this symposium is “Library Collections and Marketing Events.”

Mayor of I-Lan County Sho-cheng Liu Visits Lanyang Campus

Mayor of I-Lan County, Sho-cheng Liu and Supervisor of Chiao-Hsi Village, Cheng-sheng Lin will visit and survey the Lan-Yang campus of TKU, and hear the briefing, hosted by TKU’s Founder Clement C. P. Chang and President Horng-jinh Chang, on TKU’s future development project. The executives of county government and village office will be also present.
