ALUMNI WHO GRADUATED 50 YEARS AGO TO BE THE VIPs AT THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The Office of Alumni Services and Resource Development (OASRD) is planning to invite those alumni who graduated 50 years ago when TKU was Tamkang Junior College of English College. The office also encourages any other departments whose years of history end in “5” or “0” to hold special celebrations. The Department of Chemistry, Department of Accounting and Department of Statistics have already begun making special arrangements.

TKU PRESIDENT ATTENDS PRESIDENT FORUM OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN UNIVERSITIES

President Dr. Chang Horng-jinh was invited to attend the 2003 President Forum of Southeast Asian Universities on Oct. 18 and 19, during which he presented a thesis on “Global Changes in Higher Education”. He took the opportunity to exchange views and signed a memorandum with other universities of this region. Such exchanges should facilitate a future bilateral credit system, which in turn, should strengthen the ties among universities and the quality of higher education in Southeast Asia.

TKU HAS PASSED ISO14001 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (EMS) CERTIFICATION

“We now officially announce that Tamkang University has passed the ISO14001 certification,” declared the good news by Messrs Lu Jing-shing and Hsien Jen-cheng, the external inspectors from SGS Taiwan to President Chang Horng-jinh, Hung Ching-jen, the dean of the Office of General Affairs and staff from related offices at the closing of the certification meeting last Tuesday, Oct 14. All members present applauded and congratulated one another for the achievement. The certification will be verified in the U.K. and is expected to be returned in time for an awards ceremony scheduled on Nov. 8, TKU’s 53rd anniversary.

COLLEGES OF LANYANG CAMPUS NAMED PROVISIONALLY

The Integrated Development and Planning Section, Lanyang Campus Preparation Office, held a second committee meeting to discuss the curriculum design on Oct. 8. The committee has provisionally proposed these names: Innovative Management, Global Research and Development, and Community Development respectively for the first three colleges on Lanyang campus. The chair of the committee, who is also the Dean of Academic Affairs, Fu Hsi-jen, says that the 17- member committee will meet again in small groups at the end of this month to propose final official names of these three colleges to the Office of Lanyang Campus.

TKU FOUNDER AWARDS THE FORERUNNER

TKU Founder, Dr. Clement C. P. Chang congratulated a team of students, the members behind the “Forerunner” robotic soccer team, from the Department of Electrical Engineering who have just won the robotic soccer Championships in the 2003 FIRA World RoboCup. At the same time, he encouraged them to continue their efforts in developing a “robot with Artificial Intelligence (AI) by 2050”. He extended his congratulations to those who participated in the World Cup at the celebration party to which he and the President, Dr. Chang Horng-jinh invited them at the elegant Chueh Shuen Chinese Palace-styled Garden Classroom for lunch last Wednesday, Oct. 15.

SEMINAR FOR TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATION INNOVATIONS TO TAKE PLACE THIS SATURDAY

A one-day seminar on the innovations of teaching and administration will take place at the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall, Tamsui campus on Oct. 25. It will start at 9 a.m., chaired by President Dr. Chang Horng-jinh and supervised by Founder Dr. Clement C.P. Chang. Vice Presidents of Administrative Affairs and Academic Affairs and 200 plus upper-management staff from various offices in conjunction with teaching and administration including their directors/deans, deputy directors/deans, secretaries and professor representatives will join the seminar.

ENJOY THE SPLASHES IN LIFE

“Love has no disability” is the theme of a weeklong event introducing voluntary work for the mentally and physically disabled from Oct. 21 to 24 in the Business and Management Building. The organizers of this event are the Center of Resources for the Blind, Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section and four student social welfare clubs, which are the Sign Language Club, Torch Welfare Club, Blind Welfare Club, Fortitude-Simplicity Club respectively. The opening ceremony will take place in the Exhibition Hall of the Business and Management Building. All university resources centers and schools for the visually impaired in Taiwan are cordially welcome.

PRESIDENT CHEN SHIU-BIAN TO RECEIVE YU ZI-CHEN,

Yu Zi-chen, Chiu Wen-sheng and Chen Jun-ming, all freshmen from the Department of History, travelled to Canada on July 30 as representatives of Taiwan to attend the Second World Championships for the Visually Impaired, 2003. They were guests of honor at a reception given by President Chen Shui-bian on October 9.

MORE THAN ONE FIFTH OF TKU STUDENTS HAVE APPLIED FOR STUDENT LOANS THIS SEMESTER

6,276 students have applied for student loans this semester, which is more than one fifth of the total number registered at TKU. The Guidance Section from the Office of Student Affairs points out that this figure is the highest in recent years and may be connected to the overall economic downturn in Taiwan. Most importantly, a relaxation in the criteria for eligibility could have accounted for this increase.

STUDENT AFFAIRS COUNSELOR RESIDES AT TAMKANG GARDEN DORMITORY

No more trekking between the Office of Student Accommodation and the dormitory in order to resolve nitty-gritty issues for male students who reside at Tamkang Garden Dormitory. Last Wednesday, Oct. 15, the university authority assigned Han Huan-chung, a Student Affairs counselor to reside at the dormitory in order to take charge of the hot desk solely designed to resolve any such matters that arise.
