MORE THAN 20 HIGH SCHOOL PRICINPALS VISITED TKU

Led by Cheng-ming Liu, the Director of the Taipei City High School Principals’ Association, more than 20 high school principals visited TKU on May 26 to celebrate TKU’s winning of the 19th National Quality Award. They were met by President Flora C. I. Chang who gave them a special report on “TKU’s Principles of Leadership and Management,” sharing with them TKU’s concept of organization, mission and vision as well as the establishment of TQM culture, etc.

SHAKESPEARE EXPERT M. NOVY AND ACADEMICIAN YUAN-PENG LI LECTURED AT TKU

TKU breezed a Shakespeare atmosphere! To inspire students’ interest in literature, especially their appreciation of the beauty of Shakespearean literature, the Department of English invited world renowned Shakespeare scholar, Dr. M. Novy from University of Pittsburgh to lecture on “Women Outsiders in Shakespeare.” The lecture attracted many faculty members and students. Dr. Novy said that TKU emphasized on humanity education, and she hoped to have further academic exchange in the future. Her lecture was in English, and she pointed out that Shakespeare touched on female issues in his works in the Renaissance period. He explored the possibility of the female independence by challenging the conventions of the paternal society. English sophomore Yi-lun Xie said, “I have learned a lot from the lecture, especially I have realized that Shakespeare even showed some feminist ideas in the patriarchal Renaissance era.”

FUTUROLOGIST IAN LOWE PRAISED TKU HIGHLY

Invited by the NSC and arranged by the Queensland Trade Office in Taipei, world renowned futurologist Ian Lowe gave a lecture on “Creating the Sustainable Feature” which has highly positive feedbacks. Queensland Trade Office Director Elizabeth Sullivan wrote to thank TKU, and highly praised the world well-known reputation of TKU’s Graduate Institute of Future Studies. She also mentioned that Ian Lowe was really happy to have given the lecture at TKU, especially his discussions with the graduate students during and after the lecture.

APEC DIGITAL OPPORTUNITY CENTER FOR THE BLIND WILL OPEN JUNE 2

New Occupation Model—APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) for the Bland, a cooperated project between TKU and CHTD (Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd.) will officially open. TKU President Flora C. I. Chang, ADOC Convener Chen-rong Shi and CHTD General Manager Hsiao-tong Chang will attend the opening ceremony in Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall June 2 at 10:00 am. At the same time, the information systems for the blind jointly created by TKU’s Center of Resources for the Blind and CHTD will be displayed.

TKU WON 3RD PLACE IN LINCOLN’S GETTYSBURG SPEECH CONTEST

On behalf of TKU, English senior Yu-hui Wang took part in the National Lincoln Gettysburg Speech Recital Contest by The Lincoln Society Taipei and won the 3rd prize of NT$2000 by beating Tsing Hua University, Suchow University, etc. She also got a certificate.

FRENCH ATTACHE VISITED TKU LAST MONTH

The Attache de cooperation scientifique et universitaire, French Institute in Taipei, Dr. M. Arnauld Lalo visited TKU on May 20. International Affairs Vice President Wan-chin Tai, International Exchanges and International Education Director Pei-wha Lee and Chemistry Department Chair Bo-cheng Wang, etc. met and gave him a bulletin briefing at Ching-sheng International Conference Hall.

LEARNING MARKETING THROUGH “A SECONDHAND MARKET”
Hand-on learning marketing, Information and Communication students hosted a market selling secondhand articles which attracted many student buyers.

In his course “Creativity Strategy and Marketing Planning” Information Communication Assistant Professor Jyh-ming Yang teaches students to actively cultivate creativity and brainstorm marketing. Information and Communication students hosted the activity “Heart Moving—Tamkang” with a secondhand market on May 22, which stirred up an “upsurge of purchases.” Girl students were unable to put down the clothes, accessories, hats, bags and so on while boy students were grasping comic strips with awkward smiling. At the end, everyone was snatching small advantages. Information and Communication senior Wan-hui Gu happily cried out, “Yes! Our marketing is a success!”

NEW ONLINE ENGLISH COURSE WILL HELP GRADUATE STUDENTS GRADUATE

The 2009 enrolled undergraduate and graduate freshmen must meet the requirement of the TKU English Proficiency Graduation Threshold, namely they must pass GEPT Intermediate Level Preliminary or above or its equivalent before they can graduate. TKU will offer online English courses to help graduate students who have failed the English requirement test to graduate.

THE REMINISCENCES OF TZU-CHIANG HALL
Alumni of the 70’s and 80’s still love to talk about the “Hall Loud Calling Culture.”

Mass Communication alumnus, writer Wen-yin Zhong once said, “Tamkang life was my first time to live with others in a room. For many Tamkang girl students, Tzu-chiang Hall and Sung-tao Hall were certainly the maps of their recollections.” In her Tamkang Records English alumnus Tian-wen Chu also recalls the life at Tzu-chiang Hall. Now Tzu-chiang Hall will be renovated for other use, and let us review some memorial moments of the Hall.
