A Flawless Display of English

At Tamkang University, students are encouraged and in fact required to take any of several English proficiency tests. Students who attain above-average grades may apply to receive a small cash reward of NT $500. This year, a total of 200 students received the cash incentive.

Spotting an Eclipse at Tamkang

At 6:08am on May 21, an eclipse occurred. To get a proper glimpse of the rare event (which occurs once every 54 years), Assistant Professor Chin Yi-Nan, from TKU’s Department of Physics, set up a powerful telescope in front of the Shao-Mo Memorial Swimming Complex at 5am and invited early-rising students and passersby to join him in observing the skies.

A Lanyang-style Farewell

On the evening of the 23rd (May), the restaurant on the first level of the Clement C.P. Chang Memorial Building, Lanyang Campus, was the setting for a touching farewell ceremony. This was not a graduation dinner. It was, in fact, a way of saying goodbye to third year Lanyang students who will soon be going overseas as part of Lanyang Campus’ unique Junior Youth Abroad Program. Apart from fellow students, the party was also attended by the Chairman of the TKU Department of Banking and Finance, Dr. Chu Liou; the Chairman of the Department of International Tourism Management, Dr. Chien Mu Yeh, and the Chairman of the Department of Global Political Economy, Dr. Cheng Chin-mo.

2012 Conference on East Asian Finance

Over two days (May 26, 27) at the TKU Tamsui Campus, a major conference on East Asian finance drew scholars from over 10 countries, including Japan, the Czech Republic, America, Canada, Australia, and Korea, among others. A total of 60 plus academic papers were presented over the two-day event.

Trends in the Chinese – German Translation Industry

On June 2, the TKU Department of German is set to hold an academic symposium on the Theory and Practice of Chinese/German Interpreting. The Chairman of the Department of German, Dr. Chung Ying-yen, explained that the topics touched on in the discussion will be the environment, the current status and the future prospects of Chinese/German interpreting.

The Journal of Contemporary Accounting Editor’s Conference

On May 24, an editor’s conference was held for the Journal of Contemporary Accounting. In attendance were the Journal’s overseas editing consultant, Mary E. Barth (Joan E. Horngren Professor of Accounting, Stanford University); the editor-in-chief, Dr. C Janie Chang (Vern Odmark Professor of Accountancy, Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy, San Diego University; the President of Tamkang University, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang; as well as the President of the Tamkang Accounting Educational Foundation and TKU alumnus Chen Chin-tsai. During the opening remarks, TKU’s President Chang expressed her delight that Prof. Mary E. Barth could be in attendance.

Sophie Hong at Tamkang

Sophie Hong (picture on right) is a well-known name in the international fashion industry. Ms. Hong has not only established a globally recognized clothes brand, with stores in Taiwan, Japan, the USA, France, and Brazil, she has also received the French National Order of Merit.

How to Handle Personal Details

From May 13, a number of classes have been held to teach TKU faculty and staff how best to handle personal details. The classes have been held to coincide with new laws governing the protection of personal details. As part of the training program, on May 21 and 25 two special classes were held by Deloitte and Touch project manager and former TKU alumnus, Tseng Yao-de. The classes were called “Personal Detail Protection” and were attended by over 300 TKU faculty and staff members.
