Two Great Festivals For Thanksgiving!

【Reported by Ya-xuan Ji, Tamkang Times】On the 28th of November the English Department held the “Teacher Student Thanksgiving Dinner”. There were over 500 teachers and students that were in attendance at this festival of abundance and fellowship. The Chair of the English Department, Chen-Hsing Tsai, expressed, “This is a very touching moment, much like witnessing a miracle. There are many things to be grateful for on this magnificent day. I’m thankful for all the students and teachers who came to participate.”

【Reported by Jing-ya Su, Tamkang Times】“Taiwan is illiterate to Roman Pinyin,” said Boquan Yu, inventor of the |Tong Yong pin yin” Chinese typing system. Last November 28th Boquan Yu was invited to give a lecture on Language and Society. The lecture and 60-minute Chinese typing seminar was pertaining to the typing systems used for Chinese, Taiwanese and Hakka. After handouts and instructions of the different typing methods were given out, the Chinese typing seminar began.

【Reported by Bo-xian Lu, Tamkang Times】On November 25th the Executive Master’s Program of Business Administration in International Commerce invited Executive Director of the Fair Trade Commision, Dr. Lih-Chyun Sun, to give a lecture on “ The Global Clayton Antitrust Act and the Industrial Compliance Program.” The discussion covered international leniency policies, both national and international cases, functioning effectively in a competitive market under the Clayton Antitrust Act, the risk of illegal actions for corporations, the prevention of illegal actions of employees and strengthening the understanding of illegal corporate behavior.

【Reported by Jing-Ya Su, Tamkang Times】The Chueh-sheng Memorial Library and the Center for Learning and Teaching came together to establish the “Sensible Readers” competition. This event is designed to encourage extracurricular reading and create a more dynamic reading atmosphere on campus. The participants will have to read specific books or E-books and then present them on this online site, (http://eportfolio.tku.edu.tw) accumulating stickers that indicate their reading progress. Chien-lan Lee, from the Center for Learning and Teaching stated, “In order to encourage students to read materials from different courses, we have invited students that read materials related to finance to share their studies at the Chueh-sheng Memorial Library for a chance to win a prize.”

【Reported by Wen-yuan Zheng, Tamkang Times】On November 29th Tamkang University was awarded the “Outstanding Employer of Physically or Mentally Disabled Personnel Award” for the third year in a row. The Director of the Human Resources Department, Tung-wen Cheng, received the award on the behalf of TKU. President Flora Chia-I Chang expressed, “In the future Tamkang University will continue to develop an even more disabled-friendly environment so that disabled employees will be able to benefit from a more convenient workplace. This university has actively been involved with the New Taipei City government organizations in applying for resources for the remodeling and restructuring of university facilities. This includes new software like Zoom Text, JAWS, and English/Chinese automatic translations programs that have made work simpler for disabled employees.

Twelve Professors From the College of Science Visit Osaka

【Reported By Bo-xian Lu, Tamkang Times】On November 18th and 19th Dean of the College of Science, Bo-Cheng Wang, took Director of the Chemistry Department, Jyh Shing Lin, and twelve chemistry professors on an expedition to Osaka Prefecture University to attend the first yearly “Tamkang University and Osaka Prefecture University International Discussion.” The discussion will be published in SCI, bringing considerable exposure to TKU.

The Alliance of Taiwan Educational Clouds Brings Learning to a New Page

【Reported by Qian-jing Chen, Tamkang Times】In order to create an outstanding online educational system on campus, the Language and Teaching Research Center has united efforts with the Institute for Information and the Association of E-Learning (AEL), to establish the Alliance of Taiwan Educational Clouds (ATEC). On November 28th the ATEC inauguration took place and all of the companies and academic institutes came together to discuss the vision of ATEC. Director of the Language and Teaching Research Center, Ching-hwa Kuo, stated, “ The E-learning system on campus has gone through significant development and continues to improve methods and resources of long-distance learning. We are one of the leading universities in the nation for online learning, I eagerly anticipate what will happen after we have fully utilized the Cloud Educational System.
