【Pin-jie Chen, Tamsui Campus Report】The third Thursday of every November marks a special day on the calendar for Americans: Thanksgiving. It’s a time for fellowship and sharing that has been recognized at Tamkang University for years. The Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs (OICSA) and Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies held a Thanksgiving Banquet on Nov. 26. In attendance was Director of the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, Da-jung Li, Former Director of the Alumni Departmental Association, Shih-Yu Huang, current Director of the Alumni Departmental Association, Chin-yi Lai and 30 teachers and students.

【Yi-feng Lu, Tamsui Campus Report】Currently the tension in areas like Syria and Iraq are increasingly unstable, which could lead into a crisis at an even larger scale. This has already resulted into millions of refugees being forced to flee from their homes. The recent tragic event that occurred in Paris has only made matters worse. All of Europe is buckling down, attempting to answer the only question that matters: How do we keep people safe? This question stems into immigration procedures, people’s rights, border management, counter-terrorist measures and much more.

【Tamkang Times】Tamkang University’s Department of Chemistry travelled to Osaka Prefecture University on Nov. 19 and 20 for the third annual OPU-TKU International Symposium. The TKU representative team consisted of 9 members including Professors of the Department of Chemistry, Bo-chang Wang, Wen-jwu Wang and San-lang Wang as well as 10 graduate students. The periodicals distributed during the conference were related to solar energy, chemistry materials and academic research achievements, among which included, “Research on Chemical Intermediates.”

【Kai-jun Lin, Tamsui Campus Report】Taiwanese Tennis Legend, Rendy (Yen-hsun) Lu, came to Tamkang University on Dec. 26 to give an inspirational speech, emphasizing taking on the challenges of life. This tennis guru has played 995 matches and attracted 200 teachers and students to his lecture, including President Flora Chia-I Chang. He stated, “Tennis is my life and each game is a sped-up version of life.” Rendy Lu believes that all of the different types of challenges he’s met with on the court are illustrations of difficulties he’s seen in life as well.

The College of Foreign Languages and Literature held a ceremony marking the end of apprenticeship for the International Ambassador Team on Thanksgiving Day. From 2014-16 the team will assist the university’s plan of transitioning into a more international age. The team is made of both local and international students skilled in English, Spanish, French, German, and Russian. They will offer university services such as welcoming international guests and translations, which will help them cultivate skills while improving the environment of the campus.

【Xin-yu Wang, Tamsui Campus Report】Tamkang University has been recognized by the Ministry of Education, receiving the Central Government Promotion of Work Study Award, the Excellent Private University Award and the New Taipei City Outstanding Accommodations for Disability Award. This year marks the 3rd year that TKU has received the Central Government Promotion of Work Study Award and on Dec. 3rd the Ministry of Education will hold a ceremony to recognize this university achievement.
