A Taste of Double Ten for TKU Latin American Students

On Double Ten National Day (October 10), the Director of the TKU Graduate Institute of American Studies, Dr. Lucia Hsiao-chuan Chen, led six international TKU students to the National Day Reception at the elegant Taipei Guest House. The students are from Latin America and are part of a pioneering new academic program known as the online Executive Master’s Program in Asian Studies.

The 8th General Meeting for TKU Alumni was held on the afternoon of October 6 at Kinmen Island (金門). It was attended by over 140 representatives from TKU alumni associations from each region around Taiwan, as well as the representatives’ families. Special guests included the current President of TKU, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang; former TKU President, Dr. Lin Yun-Shan; the President of the TKU Alumni Association Headquaters, Dr. Loo Soon; the President of the TKU World Alumni Association, Dr. Chen Ching Nan; the President of the Golden Eagle Alumni Association, Mr. Kenneth Hou (also Founder and President of Kojen English Centers); and the Executive Director of the TKU Office of Alumni Resources, Dr. Chun-Young Perng.

Tamkang Receives Environmental Award for Second Successive Year

Tamkang University was recently announced as the winner of the 21st Environmental Award for Taiwanese Enterprises. Last year, it was the first university to receive the award. This year, it is the first university to receive the award two years in a row. TKU is scheduled to receive the award at a ceremony held at the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall on November 5. This award represents the highest honor that an enterprise can receive for maintaining high environmental standards, explained Shiaw-Shyan Luo, the TKU Dean of General Affairs.

Tamkang University is set to release a new application called iLife. Tailor-made for Tamkang students, the application consists of nine separate functions aimed at making TKU life just that little bit more convenient. When released, the application will allow students to view the latest TKU news, registration systems, the real-time position of nearby buses, the number of vacant seats at TKU intern labs, a live video stream of several sites around the Tamsui Campus, a campus map, a class time graph, a personalized student class schedule, and list of buildings (and their code numbers) on the Tamsui Campus.

Explaining Quality Control

On October 11, the Office of Quality Assurance and Audit held two explanatory conferences at the TKU Tamsui Campus. The conferences were held to provide faculty and staff with a more detailed overview of the upcoming 7th TKU Quality Award and 4th Quality Control Circle (QCC) Competition. Both conferences were hosted by the TKU Secretary-General, Dr. Hsu Ting-chi, and featured a keynote speech by the TKU Chief Audit Executive, Di-Ching Pai.

Professional Learning Groups Improve Instruction at Tamkang

To help raise the quality of instruction at Tamkang University, several years ago the Center for Learning and Teaching set up faculty “learning groups”. These learning groups are groups of teachers from various departments who meet regularly to discuss strategies and methods to improve the quality of their teaching. This semester, a total of 14 groups have registered under the program. Six of them are newly-established learning groups, while two of them have been around since 2009.

Youth Ambassador Keh Cheng-Hao

Keh Cheng-Hao, a fourth year student from the Department of Public Administration, recently represented Taiwan in the 2012 International Youth Ambassador Training Program. The program is held over 14 days in the US, during which time the selected youth ambassadors take part in leadership training courses, visit successful Asian enterprises on the East Coast of the US, meet city mayors and state congressmen, and visit symbolic sites around the US, such as the Federal Reserve Bank, the Congress, the Whitehouse, Rhode Island, the UN building, Harvard University, and MIT.

The Spring Cultural Trip at a Hakka Cultural Village

On October 6, 131 foreign students visited HsinChu, Northern Taiwan, as part of the 2012 TKU Spring Cultural Trip. The trip was organized by the Office of International and Cross-Strait Relations and featured a full schedule of fun activities. The students first visited a Green World Ecological Farm, and then had lunch at a Bei-Pu Hakka restaurant. In the afternoon, the participants visited Nei-wan Old Street, where they helped to make traditional Hakkanese tea by grounding green tea, sesame, and peanuts into powder.
