The Shobi University Kendo Team Visits TKU

【Reported by Jin-yu Cai, Tamkang Times】The kendo team of Shobi University in Japan brought 30 individuals for a visit to Tamkang University on the 23rd of October. They met with TKU’s kendo team in Shao-mo Memorial Gymnasium as the two teams had a friendly and exciting exchange. Coach of the Shobi University Kendo team, Iwatate, expressed, “I’m so thankful to Tamkang University for holding this event, in the future we must do our best to cooperate more often.”

The MOOCs Have Started

TKU held a press conference on October 23rd, officially announcing the beginning MOOCs. Director of the Distance Education Development Section, Ying-hong Wang, stated, “Since 2002 this university has established an online campus, paving the way for the many resources we use for our long-distance education program. Through designing these programs for exchanges with sister universities, TKU has developed a professional team with modern information-oriented capabilities. They have designed a curriculum that cultivates professional skills that are perfect for the MOOC program.”

【Reported by Yu-wen Lai, Tamkang Times】TKLA and the College of Global Development held the 2014 High Table Dinner on October 21st in the cafeteria of Lanyang Campus Academic Strength Building, themed with the rise of the new world. In attendance was President Flora Chia-I Chang, Vice President of Student Affairs, Huan-chao Keh, Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai and Dean of Academic Affairs of Lanyang Campus,Tung-wen Chung and 400 teachers and students.

Freshman International Students are Welcomed to TKU

【Reported by Yi-mei Chen, Tamkang Times】Last week, Tamkang University and Lanyang Campus held a large scale welcoming for the 300 freshman international students. The welcoming celebration was held on October 17th in the Student Activity Center, in attendance was Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, and deans and administrators of various colleges. During the event they played a film welcoming the new overseas students.

Maritime Museum Receives a New APP

【Reported by Qi-zhuo, Tamkang Times】On October 22nd in the Maritime Museum, TKU held the “Qing Dynasty- Navy and Battleship Special Exhibit,” displaying their new Maritime Museum browser APP. The theme of this exhibit presented many of Maritime Museum’s precious artifacts of the Qing Dynasty, introducing the different vessels, management systems and battle procedures. Also a collection of artwork and models were provided by professors of the Department of History to share with spectators.

President Chang Visits Sister Schools in Japan

【Tamkang University】From October 8th-10th, President Flora Chia-I Chang and the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET), travelled to Japan to meet with three Japanese universities: All Japan Universities Consortium, the Japan Association of Private Universities and Colleges (JAPUC) and the Association of Private Universities of Japan (APUJ). They also paid a visit to sister school, Hosei University, taking a tour of their campus including the Mandarin Training Center. The Executive Director of FICHET, Hwei-mei Chen, also came along for the academic visit.

Li-chou Gao Scholarship Awarded

【Reported by Jin-yu Cai, Tamkang Times】The official ceremony, awarding the Li-chou Gao scholarship took place on October 24th. This scholarship was initiated in 2003 and has helped 263 students, awarding a total of 13,150,000 NT. It was founded by alumni of the Department of Civil Engineering, Xin-ping Gao, who passed away last August. Tamkang University has decided to continue awarding the scholarship for the next 50 years in honor of his memory.

Administration Innovation Conference Takes Place at TKU

【Reported by Shi-qing Huang, Tamkang Times】Tamkang University held the yearly Administration Innovation Conference on October 25th in the Cheuh-sheng International Conference Hall. This year’s event was themed, “Taiwan’s Strategy in Higher Learning to Deal with the Effects of the Baby Bust Generation.” There were close to 190 people in attendance including President Flora Chia-I Chang, the three Vice Presidents of TKU, and various members of administration.
