Grand Welcoming Week

【Kaijun Lin, Yu-xiang Sun, Huan Du, Hong-wei Lu, Tamsui Campus】Since the start of the semester, every student group has been preparing for the Grand Welcoming Events! On Oct. 3 Tamkang University, Taiwan National University, Fu Jen Catholic University along with 12 other academic institutions came together to create the alliance known as “The iPower Squad.” This alliance was put together to work together and compete for the Grand Welcoming Event, which included almost 200 people. Team Leader of iPower and fourth-year student of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Yi-ting Li, expressed, “This welcoming event has students of all kinds so it will really help us raise our social interaction skills and help with inter-campus relations.” He shared, “I’m really happy with the atmosphere of this exchange.

TKU Gay Rights Club

In step with gay marriage laws being established in countries all over the world, Tamkang University has founded a Gay Rights student group. Club leader and fourth-year student of the Department of Mass Communication, Li-shuo Liu, expressed, “Respect is really a form of understanding. Understanding is real respect.” Every member of the group has their own personal story. Li-shuo Liu continued, “There are many things that are not suitable to share in public so it has to be suppressed and hidden away, but here people can come together and share their feelings with people who care.”

【Qi Zhuo, Tamsui Campus Report】The Career Guidance Section held a four-part lecture on Career Development and Life Planning on Oct. 7 and invited career specialist, Yu-ting Sun to share her experience with 50 students and teachers. Yu-ting Sun, expressed, “Career planning isn’t just about choosing a job, it’s about organizing your life.” She quoted a well known American author, Donald Super, stating, “By developing my career, I develop myself. I develop not for my career’s sake alone, but for adaptation to life. The more I learn and experience, the more versatile I become with my ability to operate in my given environment.”

【Shao-qi Zhang, Tamsui Campus Report】On Oct. 7, Vice President of One World Hanxing College of Journalism and Communication in Malaysia, Huang Guo Fu, brought a group of 24 people for the One World Hanxing College of Journalism and Communication 25th Annual Educational Visit. They were greeted by General Secretary Martha Shu-min Kuo. Huang-guo Fu expressed that he believes TKU is an exceptional university and he looks forward to holding more academic exchanges in the future.

【Yi-wan Lu, Tamsui Campus Report】The Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs (OICSA) and the Graduate Institute of Future Studies held a lecture titled, “The 2015 British General election; how Labour blew it and why the clever pollsters blew it too” given by Professor of the OICSA, David Coates. The event was hosted by Vice President of International Affairs, Wan-chin Tai, Director of the College of International Studies, Kao-cheng Wang and Professor of the Graduate Institute of Future Studies, Jeanne Hoffman.

E-learning Executive Master’s Program is in Session

【Yi-ding Li, Tamsui Campus Report】From 2015-16 Tamkang University’s E-learning Executive Master’s Program changed the name to the E-learning Executive Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies, Graduate Institute of the Americas. On Oct. 12 the program welcomed students to receive courses from Honduras, Panama, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Columbia and El Salvador, totalling to 21 first-year students and 10 second-year students.

Chat Corner is Back

Every year at Tamkang University the 10th floor of the Ching-sheng Building is bustling with international students for reasons of internships, visa issues and scholarship documentation. Yet the area is most frequented by international and Taiwanese students seeking to improve their language skills at Chat Corner, an activity designed to help create a bridge between local and overseas students. It runs from 12:10pm to 4pm from Mon. to Fri.; all students are encouraged to come. The Office of International and Cross Strait Affairs offers Chat Corner with with languages: English, Japanese, French, Korean and Spanish.
